  • Identify some of the most important bones of the skeletal system.
  • Describe the functions of bones.

SKELETAL SYSTEM

SKELETAL SYSTEM

CHARACTERISTICS

  • All the bones in the human body together are called the skeletal system.
  • We have 206 bones in our body.
  • The skeletal system is made up of bones, tendons, ligaments, and cartilage.
  • A place where two or more bones meet is called a joint.

Support

For example: The human spine lets people stand and walk in an upright position.

Movement

Some of your bones are filled with a special material that makes blood cells. This material is called marrow.

FUNCTIONS

Blood cell formation

Storage

Bones storage minerals that help your nerves and muscles function properly. Long bones store fat that can be used for energy.

The skeleton works with the muscles to allow the body to move. Without bones, you wouldn´t be able to sit, stand, walk or run.

The skeleton also protects the soft organs inside the body. Example: The skull protect the central nervous system.

Protection

Tendons

A ligament is an elastic band of tissue that connects bone to bone and provides stability to the joint.

What is the skeletal system made of?

Ligaments

Cartilage

Cartilage is soft, gel-like padding between bones that protects joints and facilitates movement. Your nose and outer ears are made completely of cartilage.

A tendon is a band of tissue that connects muscle to bone. They are made of collagen and help the muscles move.

It is the biggest part of the skeletal system. The bones are made up of calcium phosphate and calcium carbonate.

Bones

Skeleton

  • Bone marrow is a soft, fatty tissue that produces critical cells, including:
  • COMPACT BONE: Rigid and dense. Is the bone tissue no visible open spaces. It makes up around 80% of adult bone mass. Tiny canals within compact bone contain small blood vessels.
  • SPONGY BONE: it makes up the remaining 20% of bone tissue that has many open spaces, It´s found in the long bones and it´s surrounded by compact bone.

Structure of bone tissue

  • Bone marrow is found in the center of the bones.
  • Bone marrow is a soft, fatty tissue that produces critical cells, including: red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets.
  • The marrow produces around 2 million red blood cells every second.
  • There are two types:
  • Red marrow: Produces red and white blood cells.
  • Yellow marrow: Stores fat in the central cavity of long bones.

Arthritis

Fracture

A bone fracture is a crack or break in a bone. Bone fractures usually result from a high force impact or stress. But, people with osteoporosis or bone cancer may experience a fracture with very little impact..

Arthritis is a disease that affects your joints (areas where your bones meet and move). Arthritis usually involves inflammation or degeneration use the joint.

It´s the most common metabolic bone disease. It´s characterized by the thinning of bones, with a consequent tendency to sustain fractures from minor stresses.
