Free Enterprise
A powerpoint lecture will be given on the following subject and and will include the information below:
What does scarcity mean?
Scarcity means there is "not enough of something." Because of scarcity, people cannot have everything that they might want or need.
How does that apply to the free enterprise system?
It means the demand for a good or service is greater than the availability of the good or service.
Example:
Eleanor has a cupcake stand to collect funds for a new toy that she wants. Because her cupcakes are so delicious, the demand is very high! After two hours of selling, Eleanor is completely out of cupackes and she still has more people in line. More people wanted cupcakes than she had. This is known as scarcity.
Scarcity
Students will actively listen as they create a thinking map of the information that is being reviewed.
After going through the powerpoint lecture, students will be broken off into conenctric circles to further discuss 3 different examples of scarcity.
concentric circles
Students will be divided into two different groups and will be given 3 minutes to discuss different examples of scarcity while taking notes before rotating to the next student.
Students will continue to rotate every 3 minutes until they have met with everyone from the opposing group.
The instructor will make their way to each group to answer questions and encourage student conversations.
After students complete their discussions in their concentric circles, they will be given 15 minutes to independently research how scarcity applies to the free enterprise system.
affinity mapping
Next, students will be broken off into groups of 5 to collaborate with their peers and create a poster showing different examples of scarcity in the free enterprise system.
Students will have 30 minutes to complete their posters.
During the final 15 minutes of the lesson, students will submit a poll where they can state how they felt about the group assignment.
