Clean Water Act Sahar Attai BIOL -102
How all this Begin: The Federal Water Pollution Control Act of 1948 was the first major U.S. law to address water pollution.
President Lyndon Johnson signed the Clean Waters Restoration Act.
Results: The Clean Water Act has been successful at reducing pollution that enters rivers and lakes from ‘point sources.’ It has done many direct benefits like cleaner water, public health, recreation, and wildlife.
Led to sweeping amendments in 1972. As amended in 1972, the law became commonly known as the Clean Water Act (CWA).
Actions: The Clean Water Act made it unlawful to discharge any pollutant from a point source into navigable waters unless a permit was obtained. Industrial, municipal, and other facilities must obtain permits if their discharges go directly to surface waters.
