Evaluation of Stepping Up implementation approaches
Fills the critical gap in the literature of examining the use or effectiveness of these strategies in relation to jails and the reform of jails. How did we do?
- Examines strategies used and explore difference across size of the jurisdictions.
- Survey Questionaires via Qualtrics, phone, and mail addressed to 950 counties.
- 29 approaches grouped under 4 overarching processes examined with reference to 4 point rating system and size of the counties(small,medium and large).
81% of jail population is held in pre trial status
Jails are severely under resourced offering little by way of mental health services.
64% of the jail population reports a history of mental illness (MI),

- Resource light approaches-Relationship building and shared definitions are the dominant approaches regardless of the size of the counties or the respondent types.
