Data-driven Dialogue
oracy protocol
The purpose in engaging in a Data-Driven Dialogue is to give a voice to all members in making a shared meaning of data. This dialogue tool helps to replace hunches and feelings with data-based facts, examine patterns and trends of performance indicators, and generate "root-cause" discussions that move from identifying symptoms to possible causes of student performance.
Phase 1: Predict
Predict what the data will reveal. You may use some sentence stems such as "I assume that..." or "Some possibilities for learning that this data may present are..."
Phase 2: Go visual
After reviewing the data, make a visual that helps you better understand the information. This could be a chart, graph, or a sketch.
Phase 3: observations
Engage with the data by noting the facts you observe in the data. You might make observations about quantities, the presences of certain specific information, and/or numerical relationships between ideas. Some sentence stems you might use are "Some patterns/trends that I notice..." or "I observe that..." Try to avoid words and phrases such as "because..." and "it seems..."
Phase 4: inferences
You will be generating multiple explanations for the observations you've recorded. You may identify data that may be needed to confirm/contradict your explanations, propose solutions/responses, and identify data needed to monitor implementation of your solutions responses. Some sentence stems you might use are: "I believe the data suggests...because..." "Additional data that would help me verify/confirm my explanation is..." "I think the following are appropriate solutions/responses that address the need implied in the data..." "Additional data that would help guide implementation of the solution/responses and determine if they are working might be..."
THANK YOU!
