TUNING Protocol
ORACY PROTOCOL
The purpose of the Tuning Protocol is to identify gaps between the work/data being reviewed and the presenter's intended outcomes through a series of structured questioning, feedback, and reflection.
Presentation of context and framing question
The presenter will present the context for the data/work noting their thinking, preparation, and any implementation reflections. The presenter concludes the presentation with their hopes for this deep dive. What specifically do they want to learn about the work from this experience?
Clarifying questions
Colleagues ask clarifying questions in order to fully understand the context of the work. These sorts of questions are simple questions and likely start with who, what, how many, where, or when. A good rule of thumb for clarifying questions is that these questions are for you to understand the situation, not for the presenter to think deeply. That will happen later.
Work Review
Group members review the work and independently record warm and cool feedback for the work and in relationship to the presenter's stated goal of this experience.
Warm and cool feedback
Participants will offer Warm and Cool Feedback on the work and in relationship to the presenter's goal. Warm Feedback points out the connections of this work to the goal. Cool Feedback shows where the work isn't as aligned to the goal. (Think about the "You're Getting Hotter (or Colder)" game of finding something.) Some sentence stems for Warm Feedback might be: "I hope we keep..." "A tight alignment to the goal is..." The goal is clear in this assignment when..." Some sentence stems for Cool Feedback might be: "To better address the goal of ..., we could..." A potential disconnect is..." There is no evidence of the goal when..." The presenter listens and takes notes on the consultation feedback.
Presenter Reflection
The presenter has an opportunity to reflect back to the group what they gained. What are two or three big ideas or concepts with which the presenter is walking away with?
Tuning protocol debrief
Reflect on the experiences of or reactions to using this protocol with your team. Think about these questions as you reflect: How did having a goal assist the team in providing feedback? What was the most challenging aspect of offering feedback? Of receiving feedback? What small tweak would have made this a more beneficial experience for everyone?
THANK YOU!
