Painter Biography
Claude Monet
He was the second son of Claude-Adolphe an Louise-Justine Aubrée Monet, both of them second-generation Parsians. On May 20, 1841, he was baptized into the local church parish, Notre-Dame-de-Lorette as Oscar-Claude. His father wanted him to go into the family grocery store business, but Claude Monet wanted to become an artist. On the first of April 1851, Monet entered the Le Havre secondary school of the arts. Boudin taught Monet en "plein air" techniques for painting. Monet died of lung cancer on December 5, 1926 at the age of 86 and is buried in the Giverny church cementery. Monet had insisted that the occasion be simple; thus about fifty people attended the ceremony.
Other major works
Monet represents a quick look at the por of Le Havre covered in a light mist that makes the entire scene unclear. The artist wants to communicate feelings and thoughts to the viewer, specifically the ones he felt when faced with that sunrise.
Other major works
Researchers Hugh Honor and John Fleming say in their book History of Art that Monet still wanted to "show a direct experience of nature." That's how he thought about each big painting of the Water Lilies and where to put them in space.
Historial context of the painting chosen
The sainte-andresse'terrace
The Terrace of Sainte-Adresse or Garden at Sainte-Andresse is a painting by the French painter Claude Monet. It was painted on the terrace of a house overlooking the sea in the spa town of Sainte-Adresse during the summer of 1867. During the summer of 1867 Monet was working hard in Sainte-Adresse, emerging wonderful scenes such as the Sainte-Adresse Beach or this terrace, both taken from life despite using different lighting to reinforce the impressionist theory that light and color They depend on each moment.
Historial context of the painting chosen
The sainte-andresse'terrace
The intimacy of the terrace contrasts with the immensity of the great sea. In the foreground it offers us a view from above of a terrace delimited by a railing and flower beds occupied by members of the bourgeoisie. As is already traditional in Monet's works, the brushstroke is applied through small comma-shaped touches that become spots when the viewer approaches.
