Staff Training in MTSS / RTI PBIS SEL
Are we back? Can MTSS give all students a pathway? Yes. And staff need to understand what possible methods and interventions work.
After 2020-22 struggles, seeing Developmental Achievement, Academic Progress, and Social Norms return...
And, like barrier-free design, borne of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, works to give universal access, then our learning to meet the most intensive needs in education naturally prepares us for better meeting all students’ needs.
Multi-Tiered Systems of Support, while developed in meeting Local Education Area(s) responsibilities to the students with defined disabilities in our state, also is a framework that is inclusive of meeting the needs of all learners .
Of special note:
There are three main areas we have to shift toward to supply the broadest opportunities. The one you are most familiar with, SEL (Social Emotional Learning, perhaps has become so well used and recognized in modern Education, it does not appear in this graphic, although it is part of MTSS actions.
Shifts in focus we see within the framework
Our training focuses on three: MTSS/RTI, SEL and PBIS, the last two with activities
There are several areas

The Teaching Cycle will be inherent in determining if the steps to Intervention are having a desired effect, or need to be reassessed (consider a higher Tier of support).
An alternative environment might be considered for behaviors that persist and seriously impact the student's own learning, or that of others
- Alternative School
- Highest level of RTI and involvement of many staff resources
BIP -- Behavior Intervention Plan may be developed (Wright, 2013)
- Team established for the Intervention plan
- Can be the initial assessment toward whether student requires Special Education services
- Teacher models preferred behavior
- Actions to alter behavior may involve communication home, school counselor and/or Admin.
ALL STUDENTS (And communicated to HOME): Behavior has to be non-disruptive to the active learning environment; Comply with District/School/Class rules

Think how this idea, a clear explanation for the varied experiences of those dealing with an illness or being neurodiverse has taken about twenty years (and that's in an internet connected society) to be well-known and used.
The special educator’s role in MTSS, or in following up on progress with a PBIS plan includes:We have the universally-supplied assessments of placement and health screenings We monitor progress toward goals for (Tier two BIPs) and academic results after implementing instructional strategies. "School and grade-level teams" (and evidence of progress by the student) determine when intensive supports are dropped (The Swift ctr., 2018) The MTSS framework would benefit other professionals, the general education teachers, and all students through our shared intention for "evidence based practices for teaching and learning." (The Swift Ctr., 2018)
Members of our Special Ed. Dept. hold unique roles, but the benefits of Multi-Tiered Systems of Support are for the entire school
