«Look at the Earth!» «It’s being destroyed by her own creatures.» The alien’s spaceship was being filled up by the rumble of the explosions coming from English’s airspace. The humans were fighting each other with rifles, tanks and bombers. The extraterrestrials stood there for two months to check on the situation and understand what was going on. They noticed that Churchill, the English Prime Minister, had refused Hitler’s, Germany's leader, offer of a pacific conquest, so German bombers had started wiping out of the map every city that was under the English crown.

In the alien's spaceship...

In the alien's spaceship...

The aliens, who were hoping for a British victory, saw the army in difficulty and decided to help them by bringing a champion into the battle. You should know that, since antiquity, aliens have preserved the remains of many heroes who lived in many different eras: these bodies were encased in glass jars. These jars contained a label stating the characteristics of each hero, so to make it easier to find them, but in reality, the aliens kept the remains of these men as a 'trophy', which in their mindset was reminiscent of the bet they made whenever there was a war.

In the alien's spaceship...

In the alien's spaceship...

The aliens had invented an innovative system capable of bringing the remains of the heroes they kept back to life; in fact this machine had been used in other wars to help one side or the other. Initially, the heroes brought back to life were too backward and therefore died in battle as soon as they were introduced, so the aliens made modifications to the machine, making it possible to inject a more modern person's mindset into the body, while keeping the subject's special characteristics.

Next

The choice was very difficult and after a long and accurate analysis of the diverse characteristics of varied heroes, they arrived at two possible choices:

Hector
Guy Fawkes

Hector

Hector, a Trojan hero who, during the Trojan War, had clashed with Achilles to defend his homeland, knowing that he would die. Even at the time of the Trojan War the aliens had made a bet but because they had favoured the Trojans they had lost it and after Hector's funeral, they had taken his remains as a 'memento' of the war.

Next

Hector

During the process of bringing him back to life, they managed to inject him with the memories of a British soldier through their new invention. The aliens chose him because on his label it was stated that he had a distinguished characteristic: 'strong sense of country', this made him a valiant soldier with one goal: to fight for the British crown.

Next

Guy Fawkes

The aliens did not even remember who Guy Fawkes was, but the photograph stuck on the tin had attracted them. The problem was that when they brought him back to life, the man managed to escape and made an attempt on the Crown, trying to rise to power by killing the king. Fortunately, his attempt was blocked and he was arrested, because he was discovered trying to light gunpowder to kill the Lords of the Chamber. He was tortured to reveal the names of his accomplices and finally sentenced to hang and die.

Come back from your choice

Hector was immediately sent to his mission.

Cavalry
Royal Air Force

Cavalry

He was assigned to the cavalry and sent to Dunkirk on horseback by his commander. The journey had been tiring and the hero needed to regain his strength. For some time he settled in a cave and took some rest and then he was ready to fight. But he soon learnt that his horse was unmanageable and frightened by the difficult situation it was in. Hector did not know how to act in the face of the panic of the horse. Suddenly, a blow took out the leg of the horse and it fell to the ground. The animal was wounded and Hector was overwhelmed with confusion. Once the horse fell, the hero was shot twice in the chest by an unknown soldier.

Royal Air Force

Royal Air Force

He was assigned to the Royal Air Force. His spacecraft was very large and he was scared because he wasn't sure he would be capable of piloting it. He plucked up his courage and went up. The controls were many, perhaps too many, but despite his fear he set off. He was skilled at driving and immediately demonstrated familiarity with the machine.

New equipment

Now Hector was ready to fight for his new homeland. He was fully prepared, wearing his military-suit made of a helmet, boots and a suit that had probably belonged to a soldier who had died fighting. The only thing he needed was a weapon, a weapon that could define his fate. The aliens had already thought about everything, they wanted to test the new mentality that had just been implanted in Hector which is why they decided to give him the chance to choose which weapon would be more effective to defeat the enemies and to make the British victorious.

Next

The first option was some large objects, which even aliens had difficulty giving an appropriate name to, they had decided to call them "radars". These objects could collect noises from afar, which could greatly help the English to hear the enemies that were coming. The other possible weapon was a “rifle” which had just been made by the Aliens, but it hadn't been tried yet; it could be a great success or a failure.

Rifle
Radar

Rifle

Hector decided to choose the second option which was the “rifle”, but it was flawed and when Hector tried it, they both exploded. This happened because the Aliens had been unable to test it on the battlefield yet.

The end

Come back from your choice

Radar

Hector decided to choose the first option which were the radars. They helped a lot and gave the English a great advantage. In actual fact he had made the right choice because the rifle was missing a piece that was necessary to make it work.

Next

Dresden

It was the 15th February 1945 and the "RAF" started an aerial bombing attack. Hector was there too, flying over Dresden. Because of the bombs being dropped over the city the air was incandescent. He was relieved, the enemy was being defeated. Once he had been the hero, the only one that could defend Troy. He hadn't changed but the technology had and now there was no need to rise above all the other soldiers. Now one man could kill a nation just by pulling a switch and he was no hero.

Next

Morality

Morality changes with society, not with the human being, because human nature is static. The human perspective of events is destined to change. Hector's moral was no different than the one of the soldiers at war. Everything was the same: Omer said "οἵη περ φύλλων γενεὴ τοίη δὲ καὶ ἀνδρῶν." That meant "Like the lineage of leaves - so too that of men." The life of a human was not only similar to the life of a leaf for his fragility but also for the absence of an existential reason.

Next

Would Hector act as a soldier in WW2 or as a modern citizen?

Soldier
Modern citizen

Soldier

If Hector didn’t pull the switch he would be just an ordinary man, born from a society characterised by contradiction and regret. That switch represented how crazy societies can be. The morality that had shaped Hector's life in his first life would have made him pull the switch, but he had learnt that the new moral, the one of the modern man which he was living, considered it wrong. This is why he decided not to pull the switch. Just one man cannot change history though and the city was destroyed anyway. This led to Hector being dismissed from the Army.

Next

Modern citizen

Hector was steady, he was still exactly like he had been before, fighting with the Trojans. Hector had been transported to this historical time because the “civilization of shame” and the society during WW2 were apparently different, but actually they had created the same moral values. Hector aimed at the glorification of his homeland. Modern society would deny Hector’s rise, because he did what the moral of another time told him to do, he destroyed the city.

The end

Come back from your choice

Dresden was one of the last to be destroyed, in fact a few months after the bombing the English army won the war. After a lot of fighting, Hector died in one of the last battles: he was surrounded by a group of German soldiers and at first he was able to resist their attacks and killed a lot of them, but in the end he was exhausted and he could fight no more.

Aliens
Funeral
Option

Aliens take the body

The aliens decided to take his dead body and keep it on their spaceship in order to remember the outcome of the bet and to celebrate his fame. They also kept him in case of a new war: if one would begin, they could redo what they had just done in WW2.

The end

Come back from your choice

Funeral

But the champion died with no regrets: this time he was able to protect the crown and his new homeland, so he was really proud of what he had done; his patriotic sense was satisfied. The hero had helped a lot during the conflict, in fact he had saved the country, and the soldiers decided that he deserved an impressive and majestic military funeral. When they returned from war, they celebrated his life with a huge funeral. They buried him in a graveyard reserved for great commanders, captains and important soldiers. This was done to remember his epic accomplishments and express their gratitude. Hector was forever remembered by the English as a hero and a saviour.
