INSTRUCTIONS
Before you start, please read these instructions carefully. Throughout the game you will have to look for interactive elements, i.e. buttons, figures, arrows or images that you can click on to take you to another place. If you need to go back for any reason, you can always click on a blue arrow that will take you back to the previous page. Use it only if you need to go back. Let's get to it!

let's go!

You are looking at the planet of Climatopia, its inhabitants are about to understand how it works!! Please go to that greenhouse, there are a few pieces of information I want you to be aware before we start.

Welcome to Climatopia!

Hi there! As you might have realise, I am an investigator. This lasts years I've been worring about how Climatopia's been through serious and alarming changes reganding it's ecosystems. We know this is due to climate change, so in order to teach about it, I've built this educational greenhouse that resembles how a planet works but in a very small scale.

Please take you time to explore the greenhouse. When you are done you can just walk out the door, it's open!

But now population is complaining because they say life quality is decreasing. Please take a look around and take your guess on why is this happening.

Hey again, don't be scared. I bet that investigator is a nice guy, but he must be quite busy. Come with me so he can work, I wanna show you the insides of this factory.

Soooo, welcome to my city! As you can see, it is wealthy and developed because of industralization.

I wanted to talk to you about the means of production, specially about some materials that are used, such as plastics or non-biodegradable synthetic materials (PFAS).

Come with me!

As you can see on the screen above, PFAS are not a joke. These have been responsible of livestock and wildlife intoxication in the US in the recent past, making it an environmental hazard.

We dont know eachother yet, we will. Since we have limited time I just wanted to show you a consequence of climate change:

Climate change alters precipitation patterns, prolonging droughts. This has a devastating impact on agriculture, water availability and food security.

But wait Fire! Consequences can be on the completly opposite side of the table.

There's no time to waste! Follow me!!

DROUGHT!!!

The consequences of the melting of the poles require global action to slow down climate change. The conservation of the poles and the protection of these unique ecosystems are fundamental to preserving the health of our planet and ensuring a sustainable future.

But not only that! Melting of the polar ice caps contributes to sea level rise, resulting in inundation of coastal areas and loss of habitats

Rising global temperatures are causing accelerated melting of glaciers and ice sheets in the Arctic and Antarctic, with serious local and global consequences.

Yes!! You're right!! Please go show them what can happen. Follow her!

Natural disasters related to climate change, such as floods, storms and droughts, are forcing many people to leave their homes and become climate refugees, seeking safety and adequate living conditions elsewhere.

Wait... you don't know who we are?? Come with us, you'll know soon enough

All this might sound bleak. But there's something you can do, with our help....

This camp is now home for many people that lost their own far away from here.

Hi there! What is your name?

Now is your time!!

Most of the planet's organisms and inhabitants have been destroyed. §name§, you are the only one who can give Climatopia a second chance...

Climatopia is on the brink of destruction because of decisions that have been made. In the past, the inhabitants of Climatopia have not listened to the signals sent to them by the planet...

Welcome §name§! You only have one chance to stop history from repeating itself! But don't worry, you will not walk this path alone.

We are the 4 Elements!

I am air, with me you will fly through the present

I am water, follow me §name§!

I am fire, I will show you the future

I am soil, I will show you the past

Follow me!

Do you know the butterfly effect? Throughout this experience all your decisions will have an impact and consequences on the future of Climatopia, all of them related to climate change. To give Climatopia a second chance, decisions will start to be made from the beginning of the problem. The other three elements are your greatest time-travelling allies, guiding you through the different stages of Climatopia's history and presenting you with situations in which you will have to act - be careful what you decide!

This is your first decision...

0 to 3

What level of impact on the future of Climatopia can the decisions you make have?

4 to 7

8 to 10

let's go to our first stop!

But first, a bit back in time...

They went without you, follow them!

Hello §name§! I am soil. Yes, I know, maybe you feel a bit of confusion, that's because this time does not belong to you... We are in the past. Specifically, in the Climatopia of the nineteenth century, at the height of the Industrial Revolution.

Before the industrial revolution, work was mostly done manually, with people dedicating their day and their life to work in often extreme conditions, facing high temperatures and poor working conditions such as lack of social security. For working people there was no such thing as leisure, which was relegated to the exclusive pleasure of the wealthy. With the Industrial Revolution and the industrialisation of factories, this reality gradually changed. At the factory level, machines were introduced that accelerated the production of labour.

Question 1

What engines were created to use coal energy more efficiently?

Steam engines

Water engines

Diesel engines

you're right!

These engines were used to power trains, ships, and industrial machinery of all sorts. They brought enormous changes in society and commerce.

Info

Knowing this, you have to take the first real decision. Remember that your choice will have an impact on Climatopia's past.

what would you have done to minimize the impact of steam engines?

The Industrial Revolution was a very important movement without which we would not have all the evolution that we have now.

Develop a strategy to regulate or control the use of this energy and try not to deplete natural resources.

Create fewer machines that use this type of energy.

INDEED!

Bearing in mind that the Industrial Revolution was a completely necessary historical milestone for our evolution, a good strategy to regulate the use of energy would surely have reduced the impact on the environment.

Keep it up §name§ !

well...

it could be an option. However, the impact of this measure would only make sense in the medium term. We would not be solving the problem for the next generations.

However....!!

Of course, the Industrial Revolution was a very important and completely necessary for the present moment!

do you want to save climatopia?

The quantities and the speed at which these advances were developed have gone faster than Climatopia could withstand, leaving wounds that are difficult to heal...

Industrialization has prompted urbanization as people migrated from rural areas to cities in search of employment opportunities.
This influx of people has led to the development of urban infrastructure such as transportation systems, housing, schools, hospitals, and utilities.
However, it has also contributed to a more contaminated atmosphere in Climatopia, increasing the temperature of the planet.
If carbon dioxide is absorbed by plants, then why has carbon dioxide increased in the atmosphere?

Deforestation

Drought

Floods

If this is true... one question...

Therefore, for the construction of these infraestructures development land is required... so

Even if it were with less machines, industrialization has been very important for us. It has prompted urbanization as people migrated from rural areas to cities in search of employment opportunities

Therefore, for the construction of these infraestructures development land is required... so

If carbon dioxide is absorbed by plants, then, why has carbon dioxide increased in the atmosphere?

Clue: The increase in global temperature is due to the increase in greenhouse gases. The main gas is carbon dioxide. Plants absorb CO2 and break down the carbon in oxygen. They use th carbon to feed and grow and expel the oxygen.

This influx of people has led to the development of urban infrastructure such as transportation systems, housing, schools, hospitals, and utilities.

Drought

Deforestation

You have said that industrialization has been very important... and it is true! It has prompted urbanization as people migrated from rural areas to cities in search of employment opportunities

Floods

That's it, deforestation!

Now that you know this, what do you consider to be the best measure to mitigate deforestation?

Generate more crop fields?

Measures to reforest deforested areas?

Open urban parks?

that's it! dEFORESTATION!

KNOWING THIS... WHAT do you consider to be the best measure to mitigate deforestation?

that's it! dEFORESTATION!

KNOWING THIS... WHAT do you consider to be the best measure to mitigate deforestation?

Generate more crop fields?

Measures to reforest deforested areas?

Open urban parks?

It would be a very good solution §name§!

We will see if this is also a good measure for the future of Climatopia...

We would be taking care of our green areas, balancing the previous deforestation.

CONTINUING WITH THE INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION...

Watch the following video and answer to the question

Apart from advancing society in terms of rapid and widespread mobility, what other impacts did the emergence and mass use of transport have on society?

Water pollution from fuel combustion

Air pollution from fuel combustion

Soil pollution from fuel combustion

UNDOUBTELY, PARKS ARE VERY GOOD FOR CITIZENS §name§...

Is this enough to save Climatopia?

CONTINUING WITH THE INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION...

However, they are not the only solution to deforestation, nor the most positive one, since they don't sufficiently compensate for the damage caused by deforestation

Industrialization has facilitated international trade and globalization. The mass production of goods has made it possible to export products

Now is your turn!! If you had to travel from Spain to Italy, which transport would you choose?

Train

Plane

Boat

Very good! Indeed, is the best option in terms of environmental care among the three that we have proposed to you. Because of the number of people who can ride it, and the amount of gases it emits.

Well, my work is done, here I leave you with air to fly through the present. Good luck.

As much as it may seem like a good method of transportation, the boat is nevertheless one of the most pulluting options.

Well, my work is done, here I leave you with air to fly through the present. Good luck.

It is true that it moves a lot of people, but it is also true that it pollutes the air and the sea.

The airplane was a great advance when it came to transporting passengers in a short time, it helped a lot to globalization. However, it is the transport that pollutes our space the most...

Well, my work is done, here I leave you with air to fly through the present. Good luck!

Sadly, it is also one of the most used, even for short distances and for transporting few people (such as private jets). Climatopia's past has not improved…

Maybe this sounds a bit more familiar to you…

What comes to mind when I talk about migration, overproduction, or consumption?

Exactly §name§, welcome to the PRESENT!

And you?... What would you do as a consumer of Climatopia’s society?

Fantastic choice!

CONTINUING WITH THE GREEN POLICIES...

Opting for vegetable food from the local market is an excellent way to support sustainability.

By purchasing local produce, you are not only promoting healthier eating habits but also reducing the carbon footprint associated with long-distance transportation. Well done!

Which of the following is considered a green policy?

1. In cases where environmental damage cannot be prevented, the debt should be repaid

2. Educate and train employees in environmental practices

3. Both answers are correct

Green policies, also known as environmental policies or sustainability policies, are initiatives and regulations implemented by governments and organizations to address environmental issues and promote sustainable practices. Watch the video and answer to the questions.

Good effort! While choosing a variety of imported food is not as environmentally friendly as opting for local options. This demonstrates an awareness of the impact of transportation and carbon emissions. Remember, finding a balance between local and imported choices.

Which of the following is not considered a green policy?

Both answers are correct

Educate and train employees in environmental practices

In cases where environmental damage cannot be prevented, the debt should be repaid

It's important to note that meat consumption and production has a huge impact on environment, so it is critical to reduce meat consumption and consider more sustainable alternatives.

Which of the following is not considered a green policy?

WELCOME TO THE FUTURE!!

Congratulations on reaching the future §name§!

Your thoughtful decisions have played a significant role in shaping Climatopia's bright future.

Your understanding and commitment to environmental sustainability have paved the way for a better world.

Keep up the excellent work, as your continued efforts will continue to create a positive impact on Climatopia's future.

HOWEVER, AS YOU HAVE MADE THE RIGHT CHOICES, THIS WON'T HAPPEN! LET'S SEE WHAT WILL happen ...

Well done!

The decisions you made in the past have led Climatopia to a critical situation. However, there is still hope to turn things around.

As you learned earlier, climate change is causing Climatopia's temperature to rise. And there is another problem, when the ice melts, large amounts of gases are produced in the atmosphere, and again, this affects climate change, a vicious circle!

Welcome to the future §name§ !!!

Be cautious and thoughtful in your upcoming decisions, as they hold the potential to alter the course of Climatopia's future. Remember, your choices matter, and with the right actions, we can work towards a more sustainable and thriving world.

Good luck!

Oh no! Welcome to the future §name§!!!

Unfortunately, your previous decisions have brought Climatopia to a critical situation.

Every decision you make from now on carries tremendous weight and can determine the survival of Climatopia!

It's crucial that you prioritize sustainability, take responsibility, and make wise choices to reverse the catastrophic path. The fate of Climatopia rests in your hands. Best of luck, and let's work together to save our world.

Great job! Your willingness to sacrifice some of your habits, such as using the car as the main means of transportation, shows a strong commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Increasing temperature and decreasing precipitation causes:

Impacts biodiversity and the risk of extinction of species

Worsering water quality

Increased tree mortality, deterioration and dissappearance of wetlands

All the answers are correct

It demonstrates your understanding of the environmental impact associated with meat production. Livestock farming contributes significantly to greenhouse gas emissions and deforestation. By reducing your meat consumption or opting for plant-based alternatives, you help mitigate climate change and promote a more sustainable future for Climatopia. Your efforts are making a difference!

WRONG ANSWER!

Try again if you want to save Climatopia!

Citizenship forced us to rethink the development of our business. It was no longer about single-use, plastics or clothes made with cheap labour. We had to think of new models... and so we did! Moreover, we comply with all public policies and with what the institutions tell us, within our privacy, of course. We are aware that we must use renewable energies, that we cannot use energy sources that pollute or damage ecosystems. That is why, when we want to set up our industries, we do so with the environment in mind. We are aware that, if we continued at that rate of production, we would not have a planet to sell our products on, and that we had to make peace. But the people who really changed our thinking were the citizens.

They no longer bought our polluting resources, nor did they consume our services unless they were environmentally friendly. So we adapted to the new Climatopia. To an ideal Climatopia.

We have many policies that we decided to put in place when we saw that there was no turning back. I'm going to tell you the main ones, although we have a lot of them. Mainly, we use green energy for everything, there is no other type of energy. Thus, we use wind, solar, geometric, oceanic energy... both public and private. In addition, all buildings are equipped with natural energy sources. That's it! Like solar panels. Another big measure is to protect ecosystems. It is a high priority that we at the public level protect all our environments. Ecosystems were losing their ability to combat climate change, so we decided to protect rivers, wetlands, forests, oceans... And so far, as you can see, it has been one of the best decisions we have made.

We have restored the poles, the oceans are at their best, free of plastics and toxics, the forests are not burning and are not suffering from fires, and the rivers have their most abundant flows.

Also, if we have to travel long distances, we try to travel by train or, if not, we try to offset carbon. This is something that is national policy, and everybody is aware of it. If you see the streets a bit dark it is because we have been able to reduce the consumption of light, which, as well as being completely environmentally friendly, we try to turn on only the light that we are going to use. In this case, you will see a couple of streetlights lit for people's safety when they walk down the street.

PFAS

per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances
"The magic material"

They have been used in the manufacturing of products such as non-stick coatings (Teflon), firefighting foams, waterproofing materials (Gore-Tex), packaging materials, and many others. This material has been found in almost all individuals who underwent a study on the detection of this material in humans. (95% in a study made by BIOAMBIENT.ES between 2007 and 2019)

We have completely changed the content so that the environment is something transversal that they receive from the moment they arrive at the school. And all schools work in the same way. Awareness-raising and prevention is our priority. All schools are public schools, so all children have access to quality and sustainable education. The school also carries out actions for the environment, those that are dictated to us by the institutions, but we do them with the awareness that this is what is necessary to live in the world we live in. Families are involved and collaborate 100% with the schools, there is real cooperation and everyone is aware that the environment comes first. There are also solidarity canteens, vegetable gardens and playgrounds that are perfectly responsible and respectful of the environment.

The companies are the ones that had the worst time, but they adapted very well to all the decisions that the citizens made. Do you want to go and talk to them? Click on the private sector button to find out.

We reached a point where we understood that we had to do everything in our power to solve the situation. Everybody recycles every day of the year. We reuse almost everything we can, we have an exchange system and once a month people exchange what they no longer use for other things they need, until the item in question has been given its full life. We only use what we need, so we have reduced consumption a lot, we only buy the things we are going to need. Clothes, food, electrical appliances... We try to give everything a second life, either in our house or in our neighbour's house.

Oh yes, that's the seat of our governments. Do you want to come in?
