TIME EXPRESSIONS

TIME EXPRESSIONS. ADVERBS OF FREQUENCY AND PREPOSITIONS OF TIME

context

  • When we speak about habits and routines, we normally use time expressions to refer to “WHEN” or “HOW OFTEN” these routines happen.
  • Specify when an action happens
  • We use expressions such as: “EVERY DAY”, “ONCE A WEEK” or “TWICE A MONTH”. Also, we use expressions with prepositions “ IN, ON, AT” and “ADVERBS OF FREQUENCY”.

Adverbs of frecuency

  • We use adverbs of frequency to say how often we do something. I usually have breakfast at home. She´s never late.
  • The adverbs of frequency go before most verbs e.g. He never listens to me but after the verb be e.g. Sarah is always friendly

PREPOSITIONS IN, ON, AT

  • We use IN before PARTS OF THE DAY, SEASONS, MONTHS AND YEARS and LONG PERIODS
  • We use ON before DAYS OF THE WEEK AND DATES.
  • We use AT before a precise TIME AND TIMES OF THE DAY, “THE WEEKEND”, MIDDAY, NIGHT, LUNCHTIME, CHRISTMAS.

How to tell time?

There are two common ways of telling the time. 1) Say the hour first and then the minutes. (Hour + Minutes) 8:05 - It's eight O-five (the O is said like the letter O) 9:11 - It's nine eleven. 2) Say the minutes first and then the hour. (Minutes + PAST / TO + Hour) For minutes 1-30 we use PAST after the minutes. For minutes 31-59 we use TO after the minutes.
