THE USE OF SUBJECT AND OBJECT RELATIVE CLAUSES

When we need to give essential information about the noun in a sentence, we use a defining relative clause. Cuando necesitamos dar información esencial sobre el sustantivo en una oración, usamos una relative clause.

example:

He was the man who I saw you with yesterday.

El era el hombre con quien te ví ayer.

When we need to give essential information about the noun in a sentence, we use a non-defining relative clause.The extra information is placed between commas, or between a comma and a period when at the end of a sentence. Cuando nosotros necesitamos dar información esencial acerca del sustantivo en una oración, usamos un non-defining relative clause. La información adicional es ubicada entremedio de las comas, o entre una coma y un punto final de una oración.

example:

The James Bond movies, which are about a British secret agent, are hugely popular

Las peliculas de James Bond, las cuales son acerca de un agente secreto britanico, son bastante populares.

When the relative clause is about the subject of the sentence (a subject relative clause), we must include the relative pronoun. But when the relative clause is about the object (an object relative clause), the relative pronoun is optional. Cuando el relative clause trata sobre el sujeto de la oración (un relative clause con sujeto), debemos incluir el relative pronoun. Pero cuando el relative clause trata acerca del objeto (un relative clause de objeto), el relative pronoun es opcional.
