Evangelista Torricelli foi um físico e matemático italiano;​ ​ Nasceu a 15 de Outubro de 1608 e morreu a 25 de Outubro de 1647, com 39 anos;​ ​ A experiência de Torricelli foi feita em 1644 e resultou na primeira medida de pressão atmosférica;​ ​ Esta experiência veio como necessidade para melhorar o fornecimento de água nas cidades;​ ​ Torricelli estudou os fenómenos hidráulicos com Galileu.
