analysis of the work

The painter recounts this event :

  • It shows the little girl in her immaculate white dress, walking with a determined step.
  • The white of her dress represents his innocence.
  • The background wall also generates a dirty contrast whith racist incriptions and tomatoes crushed .
The splash shows the violence of the gesture and the red color recalls the color of blood .
  • The 4 federals can be recognized by their costume ,badge, armband , and mission order .
  • Ruby's attitude is detashed from what's going on around ;she is focused on the goal of going to shcool.
  • On the wall we can read the insulting inscription "Nigger" which means "nègre" in french a word with a racial connotation.
  • We also see the initials K.K.K (Ku.Klux.Klan) a racist sect founded in 1865 which rages againist acts of terrorists againist non- white people.
  • Ruby is firmly holding some school supplies , among which we can see a starry blue blanket that is not reminiscent of the american flag and the values it conveys.

New kids in the moving in 1967

Comparison of the works

Despite their color difference,we perceive a certain number of points which gather.Black kids have a white cat and white kids have a black dog(color doesn't metter in animals), little boys they all love baseball and they have the same style of dress.

the artist by showing all these common points between the children shows a vision rather optimistic about the future of black and white relations.

a quote

"It's not the color of our skin that makes us different,it's the color of our thoughts"
