"I thought myself quite the sharp little witch in my youth. Top of the class, honor roll, scholarships, you name it, I achieved it. When I heard about this masterful guild of puzzles and riddles and rhymes, it felt a bit like a challenge. My peers regarded it with a humorous exchange, spoken about in passing , but the never fully considered as an opportunity. When winter break came about, I hauled myself to the Guild and marched through those doors with the confidence of a lion. It was supposed to be the day that I proved to myself that I could do it all... instead, it was the day I was humbled." -Lyria Fantaplus
Remember, this is not a riddle to be solved. The poem on the front tells you how to solve the rhymes on the back. Each line of the rhyme has two parts: one part hints at a type of element (wind, fire, water, earth.) The second part involves a number denotation (first, twice, lonely, sixth, etc.) Pay close attention to the elements in the front page poem. Do they connect to the symbols at the top of the page somehow?

"The migration of the Tortapax was a sight to see! I was the only mage to make the trek to those lonesome foothills and observe it. I saw more than just a migration those weeks... I observed a family. A well-oiled machine of a herd with a shared goal: the pursuit of contentment and the continuation of tradition. By the end, I couldn't bear to leave. They offered me a permanent spot among them...not uncommon for the Tortapax, apparently... of course I agreed. By evening, I was part of the herd. They felt more a family than any human had before." -Daniel Womp
The desert was cold and unforgiving. I was on the edge of winter, coming into a cool spring at the start of my journey. The sand held no warmth from the sun come nightfall, and the noises scratching at the walls of my tent made for sleepless nights. I endured blisters, cactus spines, dehydration, sunburn. Towards the end of my third week, I packed up and made for the border. That night, gazing out over the blues and purples of the dark desert... I saw it. I felt it. That wave of Wild Magick flooded the valley, cactus became man, rock became water, and tarantulas the size of horses scurried for the cover of the mesas. My feet hit the ground running before the clouds could even clear the moon. That one moonbeam struck against that magick wave, it burst with the ferocity of lightning. I finally found it. -Reese Lyrion
"The hallucinations were vibrant... and terrifying! As a child, I'd often fall sick with fever, and the dreams I had while sick in bed were all too similar to the effect of the berry. I'd never have thought that a single touch would be so troublesome. It was several hours before I stopped spinning and the technicolor went away, but I have vivid memories of the things I saw. Some were beautiful, and some were terrible." -Eman Fond
"My grandfather was one of the last Grimbriar students to receive his acceptance letter by owl. He fondly recalls the story every time there's a storm, as the delivery came during a hurricane. He was sitting in the kitchen, being scolded by his mother for breaking a dish, when he spotted the silhouette of a bird against the lightning outside! He threw open the windows and in came crashing an owl with a soggy envelope in its beak. They were both so startled that his mother forgot all about the scolding. They warmed the bird up by the hearth and dried the letter. He has it framed by his office desk." -Emily Jones

"My first pompon kin left me in tears. It was a drizzly night, so we returned to the cottage my host invited us to stay at. Though I was a child, I recall the details of the night so vividly. I was enamored with the Harvest Magick. Seeing a pumpkin come to life, giving it a face to speak with, bringing it home for the night... it was all so magical. Having no experience with magic prior to that night, I believed I was dreaming for most of it. I remember having a warm friend for the night. We didn't speak the same tongue, yet it didn't stop us from having a grand time. We ate, we danced, we napped before the fireplace. When I awoke, holding that little pumpkin in my lap, it did not stir with me. The light from within had gone out. It was many years before I understood - that those special friends must return from whence they came." -Malora Vain

"A great beast descended from the clouds, then. Unlike many of the other draconic species I've witnessed, these dragons eyed me with what I could only describe as a hesitant curiosity. I was not a meal nor a threat. I was simply a creature upon this earth, happening to exist in the same space. The marks upon their flanks spoke of sharp whips, and the indentations around their joints spoke of iron shackles. They had been betrayed, and yet they did not attack. I would spend the next weeks in an attempt to learn more about the dragons of the highlands. I hope to do them justice in my research." -Edison Embleton

"I recall my first wand fondly. My father took me to Circe's Fine Wands - a rather exciting adventure for a youngling. I remember the smell of cinnamon. The swish of a helpful witch's cloak. The feel of the wands in my hands. My father told me I would feel a "click" when I had found the right one. I half expected a button-like sensation to press into my palm when I found the wand. And then I found it. A rich, black-stained wand with a twist in the hilt. A gleaming moonstone embedded in the tail. It was indeed a "click," but less physical than I expected. It felt like meeting an old friend. Taking a bite of your favorite dessert. The thrill of adventure." -Emilia Pondock
"I traveled a far distance to a land unknown to me. I had intended to study the sands, their patterns, and their use in alchemical processes. You can imagine my surprise when during the night, nestled in the comfort of my tent, a cacophony of horns sounded just beyond my feet. And I thought I'd lost my spryness in my old age - alas, I leapt from the sheets with the vivacity of a schoolgirl! Peeking between the flaps of the tent - I saw them. A mass of crab-like creatures scuttling in a wave across the sands. They moved gracefully, coordinated. And yet - they honked with the vigor of angry geese. Needless to say it... I did not sleep much that journey." -Moira Jolt

"I recall my first trip to Winnie's. I had fallen and scraped my knee, and the accident caused me to cry. In a blink, a shop appeared in front of me. It smelled like the stables at home, which comforted me. An elderly woman with an owlcat perched on her shoulder opened the door, picked me up from the ground, and dusted me off. She brought me in for a bandage and a cup of tea. She sent an owl to my parents to let them know I was safe, and as she did, a small puffball of a beast clambered into my lap as if we had known one another for a lifetime. It went home with me that day and stayed beside me for 23 years." -Bellinda Brandythimble

"I could feel its presence as it brewed potions in the dark, surrounded by glowing plants and sea creatures. I was in awe of the Brewer's power and knowledge of the deep ocean's secrets. We exchanged words, and the Brewer offered me a potion that would give me the power to control the ocean's currents. I accepted the potion with gratitude, and we parted ways as I headed back to the surface, feeling more powerful than ever before." -Romelly Henn

"I remember my first venture into magical machinations. It was a peculiar little curiosity shop in the heart of Cairo, drenched in the aroma of antiquity. I was just an upstart wizard then, eager and wide-eyed. My gaze fell upon an intricate automaton, no bigger than a sparrow, humming with enchantment. Oh, the elegant brass gears, tiny sapphire eyes! The shopkeep offered no bargain, no haggling, merely the promise of companionship and wonder. Purchasing that automaton was more than a simple transaction; it was an initiation, a baptism of sorts, into a realm where wizardry intertwined with machinery. The delight of discovery... it still sparks in me whenever I wind up my petite mechanical confidant." -Aldwyn Embergleam

"I still remember my first encounter with the Akara. Ah, those curious, tuberous beings, humble miners of the earth's bounty! Their existence, it was simple, yet deeply profound. They burrowed in earnest - unearthing treasures most overlook. Nuggets of wisdom, gemstones of time, roots of history all mined with hands that resembled the very roots they lived amongst. The rhythm of their work was like a hymn, a lullaby to the deep and quiet earth. They taught me patience, reverence, the art of mining the unseen. In the company of the Akara, I was no longer just a witch, but a humble student of the earth. -Melisande Roosh

"To just anyone, Cat Speak sounds like any other housecat warbling on about how you're probably starving them - despite their bowl being full. To a knowing mage, however... It enters the ear like a whisper. It is soft, breezelike, and sounds like the color of night. The vowels are long and drawn out. The end of a word tilts downward in tone. It is as though an elderly friend is reading you a bedtime story. Of course, cats rarely say such doting things. More likely, he is insulting your hat - or divining that you will twist your ankle in three weeks' time." -Morgan Plowdrip

Jaali Kimani
Professor of Magical History
Jaali Kimani, a wizard of extraordinary wisdom and patience, is the Professor of Magical History at Grimbriar Academy of Magick. Born and raised in Kenya, his youthful love for ancient, magical lore ultimately led him to specialize in the interconnected tapestry of magic and time. Kimani believes that understanding the past is critical to responsibly shaping the future, which is why he chose to dedicate himself to teaching Magical History. His favorite thing about Grimbriar is its extensive library of historical scrolls and ancient tomes, the largest collection outside of the wizarding world's foremost archives. In his spare time, he is an avid herbal tea connoisseur and could discuss the subtle flavor profiles for hours if you indulge him.
"Look beyond the surface. History's lessons are hidden in layers. In unraveling the past, we understand the present and foresee the future."
Milligan Munroe
Professor of Curses and Hexes
Adept in the darker side of magic, Professor Milligan Munroe serves as Grimbriar's primary educator on curses and hexes. Born in Scotland, the mystique of ancient curses that whispered through his homeland's highlands drew him into his field. He teaches to help his students understand the gravity and consequences of such magic, intending to prevent misuse. Munroe loves Grimbriar's commitment to teaching a balanced magical curriculum that doesn't shy away from these darker arts. He’s a secret fan of romance novels, an unusual contrast to his academic interests. In his youth, Munroe was struck by a sucker punch hex that broke his nose in six places.
"Curses and hexes hold immense power, but remember: darkness is best understood when offset by light."
Edina Fwill
Professor of Charms and Enchanments
Professor Edina Fwill is Grimbriar's personable expert on charms and enchantments. Originally from Wales, her upbringing was immersed in the magic of her ancestors, druidic nomads, which sparked her fascination for the potency of enchantments. Teaching at Grimbriar allows her to pass on her extensive knowledge and keep these ancient practices alive. What she loves most about the academy is its emphasis on combining the traditional and contemporary approaches to magic. A birdwatcher in her free time, she finds inspiration in the magic of nature and frequently holds class outside, rain or shine. She dreams of one day meeting a phoenix in person.
"An enchantment is only as strong as the heart that wills it. Practice with intention, and you’ll discover magic within that you didn't know existed."
Uma Sharma
Professor of Beasts
Professor Uma Sharma, an accomplished witch hailing from Punjab, India, is the resident authority on magical beasts at Grimbriar. Her childhood, spent around the majestic creatures of India's magical reserves, inspired her to study and teach about the mystical animals that share our world. She adores Grimbriar’s diverse habitats for magical creatures, where they can be respected and studied in their natural environments. An expert sitar player, Sharma often uses music to communicate with magical beasts. Students frequently find her napping in the stables or sharing her lunch with the pegasus. Her classes are notoriously difficult, yet rewarding.
"To understand a beast, you must first understand its heart. Respect and empathy are our greatest tools."
Roda Hennenthorpe
Headmistress
As the esteemed Headmistress of Grimbriar Academy, Roda Hennenthorpe oversees the education and well-being of the institution’s bright young mages. A prodigy in her time, she dedicated her life to guiding the next generation of mages after witnessing the transformational power of education. Hennenthorpe’s passion for Grimbriar lies in its rich heritage and its ability to inspire students to explore the diversity of magic. An accomplished collector, her office is adorned with clocks from all over the world, including an impressive number of cursed clocks which are kept behind charmproof glass. Hennenthorpe conceals many secrets, though they are for the good of the school and its students.
"Never be afraid to question and explore. Magic, like knowledge, is boundless - and so is your potential."
Louise Pembuckle
Student Preceptor
Louise Pembuckle, a notable Grimbriar alumna and a potion brewing virtuoso, currently serves as Grimbriar's Assistant Professor of Potions and Student Preceptor. Louise, as an adventurer and ethical brewer, prefers to personally source her potion ingredients from around the world. Her favorite part of Grimbriar is its enchanting ambiance and its encouragement of exploration in magical studies. Her experience as a homesick student has equipped her with a deep understanding and empathy for newcomers, making her an excellent mentor. Louise is an ardent animal lover, tending to a small colony of stray cats at her home. Her pet cat, Tubs, often accompanies her to Grimbriar, much to the students' delight.
"It's the choices you make that will truly shape your path. Embrace curiosity, show kindness, and never fear to ask for help when you need it."
Henderman Losche
Professor of Potions

Raised in Texas, Losche's fascination with alchemy and transformative magic led him down the path of mastering and now teaching Potions. His passion lies in the unpredictable nature of potion brewing - the element of surprise and the sheer potential locked in each concoction. Losche is particularly fond of Grimbriar's commitment to magical experimentation and exploration. He appreciates the freedom the Academy provides in pushing the boundaries of potion brewing, fostering a culture of magical innovation. Known for his flair for the theatrical, Losche is also a passionate puppeteer. He weaves magical tales with his handcrafted puppets, often putting up enchanting performances for the school.
"Perfection is meant to evade us. Make mistakes, for it is in errors that we often discover new paths."
Aebin Lee
Professor of Plants and Fungi
Raised between China and America, Professor Aebin Lee brings his deep reverence for the rich traditions and ecological diversity of both homelands to his role as Grimbriar's Professor of Magical Plants and Fungi. His fascination with lush, mystical landscapes has shaped his academic career and inspired his dedication to fostering a similar curiosity in his students, guiding them through the enthralling world of magical botany. One of Aebin's favourite aspects of Grimbriar is its exceptional biodiversity, which allows for a unique opportunity to cultivate and study magical plants in near-natural environments. A surprising facet of Aebin is his proficiency in sewing, a skill he often blends into his magical practices. His artistry is particularly appreciated when he crafts intricate robes imbued with plant and fungi-based enchantments.
"In our work with plants and fungi, we are not their masters but their partners. Approach them with respect and an open mind, and they will share their wisdom with you."
