04. FOOD
The cuisine of Sweden is very similar to the cuisine of Denmark or Norway. It is considered simple, it abounds in dishes with different types of fish, potatoes, cabbage and turnips as predominant ingredients.
- Kroppkakor, stuffed potato balls.
- Raggmunk (a kind of potato pancake).
- Strömmingslådor (a stew with herrings).
- Smörgåstårta (a kind of salty cake, made in layers, with ham, shrimp, eggs, tuna…).
- Rödbetssallad or beet salad.
05. MONUMENTS
It has more than 50 bridges, as well as a medieval old town, Gamla Stan, royal palaces and museums, such as the open-air Skansen.
- Turning Torso
- Kalmar Castle
- Royal Palace in Stockholm
- Vasa Museum
06. CURIOSITIES
2. North Korea owes a lot of money to Sweden:North Korea owes Sweden €300 million for "stolen" 1,000 Volvo 144GLs in 1974. Having no foreign currency at the time, the North Koreans promised to pay for the cars with copper and zinc but those minerals never reached Sweden. Every 6 months, Sweden sends them reminders but they don't get a response. And the strong thing is that you still see some of those Volvos operating as taxis in Pyongyang, the capital. Almost 50 years later!
1. We must thank them for founding Ikea, right?:And for their meatballs too. To give you an idea of what Ikea can bill, an average of 1,836,000 meatballs are eaten per year in all Ikea stores around the world. And it is that Ikea was founded in Sweden in 1943 by Ingvar Kamprad.
3. There are few Swedes in Sweden:One of the best curiosities of Sweden has to do with its small population. Sweden is the third largest country in size in the European Union (after France and Spain). However, it has the second lowest population density, about 23.5 people per square kilometer.
4. It is a very peaceful country:Despite being a huge military power in the 17th century and one of the world's largest arms producers, Sweden has not been involved in any war for almost two centuries, including both world wars.
5. The kingdom of swedes: Around 2,000 years ago, the inhabitants of Svear gave their name to Sweden. In their language, svear meant "we" and rike meant "kingdom." So Sverige, the modern name of the country in Swedish, means "Our Kingdom."
