INTRODUCTION

Upupa epops better known as hoopoe, ´´abubilla´´ or ´´puput´´(how they call it in cataluña) is a species of bird, known for its crest-shaped plume of feathers.

The scientific name is the result of the union of the name of the hoopoe in Latin: upupa, and in Greek: ἔποψ épops.

The Madagascar hoopoe (Upupa marginata) is a species of hoopoe in the family Upupidae. It was previously considered a subspecies (Upupa epops marginata) of the hoopoe, but was split due to its vocalisations and small differences in plumage. The call is different than Eurasian and African hoopoe that sing with a "roooow"

The African hoopoe (Upupa africana ) is a species of hoopoe in the family Upupidae. Previously considered as a subspecies (Upupa epops africana ) of the Eurasian hoopoe, it is a resident species of southern Africa.

The Eurasian hoopoe (Upupa epops ) is the most widespread species of the genus Upupa. Its call is a soft "oop-oop-oop".

HOOPOE HABITS

They are birds so they breathe throw lungs. They have air sacs that permits them to breathe as they are flying.

The hoopoe spends much of its time walking. This is due to its way of feeding, and its curved beak is used to rummage through animal feces. Their diet is also based on insects.

The hoopoes have a disgusting defense that consists of not picking up their feces in the nests and they also have a "glándula uropígea" that contains an oil that also contains a very bad smell

They are oviparous this means they lay eggs.One thing that the hoopoes do is that over time the eggs are stained brown by the bacteria that are preserved, this serves to make the eggs harder and more resistant.

Hoopoe are homeotherms this means their body temperature is constat.

FACTS

1. Hopoe raise their crest according to their mood, being very conspicuous in flight and with their crest unfurled when perched.

3. Hoopoe is the National Bird of Israel

4. In fact, the hoopoe appears in the Quran carrying messages between King Solomon and the Queen of Sheba. In Umm al-Jimal, as the story goes, the sight of a hoopoe brings good news, and indeed that good news is often the forecast of rain.
