Vectors in the Real World: Sports
By: Loreen Nepomuceno
Background Information
Quantities that have both a magnitude and a direction are represented by factors. Arrows are used to symbolize them. The length or magnitude is represented by absolute value symbols. The angle and head (arrow) of the factor represent its direction. Vectors have many real world applications in sports like baseball/softball, football, etc.
Learning Target
Connect, compare, and solve a scenario that involves vectors in magnitude/direction form.
Problem
The kicker is attempting a field goal from the 25 yard line. He is lined up directly in front of the goal post. The goal is 13 yards high. At what direction and what distance does the kicker need to kick the football to score a field goal?
Solution
13 yards
25 yards
Solve for magnitude:
Solve for direction:
a^2 + b^2 = c^2√25^2 +13^2 = c c = 28.2 yards
tan^-1(y/x)tan^-1(13/25) = 27.5 degrees
