Navigation of airplanes
Essential Question: How can I apply vectors into real world scenarios such as navigation?
Vectors in navigation
Vectors are vital in navigation because the real velocity of an aeroplane relative to the earth is given by the combined velocities of the wind and the plane's velocity in still air.
Example: An airplane is traveling a speed of 500 mph heading N 30º W at a fixed altitude. The plane encounters a wind blowing with a velocity of 70 mph in the direction of N 45º E. What is the resultant speed and direction of the plane?
