SIMPLE MACHINES

They have one or two parts. They make work easier by reducing the effort needed. The basic types are: the lever, wheel and axle, pulley, inclined plane, screw and wedge.

A LEVER It is a rigid bar with a pivot point (where the lever turns). The load is the force that is exerted by the object that needs to be moved. The effort is the force applied by the person who uses the lever.

INCLINED PLANES, SCREWS AND WEDGES An inclined plane is a ramp used to lift and lower objects. It only has one part. It increases the distance we move an object but reduces the effort needed. A screw is an inclined plane wrapped around a pole. A wedge has two inclined planes. An axle is wedge.

A PULLEY It uses a wheel and axle and a rope that runs round a groove. Pulleys make it easier to lift or lower heavy objects. Two or more pulleys together make it even easier.

TOOLS AND MACHINES

They help make work easier. Tools can be operated by hand (HAND TOOLS) or use electricity (POWER TOOLS)

Mechanical components in machines: The wheel and axle transmit movement. Pulleys lift heavy weights. Gears are wheels with teeth that connect together to increase the power of force in machines. Brakes are used to slow down or stop movement.

ELECTRICITY

It is produced by the movement of electrons. All matter is made of atoms and they have electrons. An electric current flows between a positive charge and a negative charge. This happens inside the wires

MACHINES AND ENERGY

All machines need energy to work. It can come from different sources: human energy, electricity, fossil fuels and wind energy.
