prevention

Vaccination is avalible and can prevent from some variations of bacterial pneumonia. Practicing good hand hygiene, smoking cessation and regular physical activity/good nutrition are all ways to prevent spread!

People with underlying conditions such as diabetes or heart failure Individuals above the age of 65Children younger than 5 years old Those with weakend immune systems Individuals who smoke Those who are in the hospital for long-term stays

Pneumonia can be a bacterial, viral or ventilator acquired infection that can inflame the air sacs in one or both lungs. Community-acquired pneumonia is the most common type of pneumonia. THE INFECTION CAUSES THE LUNGS TO SWELL AND FILL WITH PUS OR FLUID LEADING TO DIFFICULTY BREATHING. PREVENTION INCLUDES VACCINATION, SMOKING CESSATION, AND CAREFUL HAND-WASHING. OFTEN MILD PNEUMONIA CAN BE MISTAKEN FOR THE FLU OR COMMON COLD. Those WHO ARE SEEKING LONG TERM TREATMENT IN HOSPITALS ARE AT AN INCREASED RISK FOR HOSPITAL-ACQUIRED PNEUMONIA DUE TO ANTIBIOTIC-RESISTANT BACTERIA. Fluid accumulation in the lungs can cause pleural effusion to occur (fluid in the tissue lining the lungs and chest). ABOUT 55,000 PEOPLE DIE EACH YEAR DUE TO PNEUMONIA IN THE US, AND IT IS THE MOST COMMON CAUSE OF DEATH IN DEVELOPING COUNTRIES.
