PREHISTORY PERIOD STARTED ABOUT 5 MILLION YEARS AGO AND ENDED WHEN PEOPLE LEARNED TO WRITE.

IN PREHISTORY...

People lived in tribes and slept in caves or tents.

They hunted, fished and collected fruit and berries.

They used tools made of wood, stone or bones.

They wore clothes made of animal skins.

They discovered fire and invented the wheel.

People couldn't write or read.

ANCIENT HISTORY

Ancient History started with the beginning of writing, about 35oo BC.

THE FIRST CIVILISATIONS APPEARED: ANCIENT GREEKS AND ROMANS

ANCIENT GREEKS

The Greeks called the Iberian Peninsula IBERIA.

They believed in many gods: ZEUS WAS THE GOD OF SKY.

They liked theatre and sports. They invented the OLYMPIC GAMES.

The Greeks invented COINS to buy and sell things.

Many important PHILOSOPHERS appeared: SOCRATES, PLATO, ARISTOTLE.

The Romans built a large empire in Europe and Africa.

They came to the Iberian Peninsula in 218 B.C. They called it HISPANIA.

The Romans invented Latin.

They built ROADS, BRIDGES AND AQUEDUCTS.

They liked art and culture. They wrote many books.

MIDDLE AGES

THIS PERIOD STARTED WHEN THE ROMAN EMPIRE ENDED IN 476 AD

MUSLIMS CAME FROM THE NORTH OF AFRICA AND CONQUERED THE SOUTH OF THE IBERIAN PENINSULA. THEY CALLED IT al-ANDALUS.

LA ALHAMBRA IN GRANADA

Christians, Muslims and Jews lived together in al-Andalus in the south.

Most towns in al-Andalus had a WALL around them. The centre was called the MEDINA and the market place was the ZOCO.

People prayed in MOSQUES.

CHRISTIAN KINGDOMS

In the North there were CHRISTIAN KINGDOMS.

KINGS AND QUEENS were the RULERS.

THEY LIVED IN CASTLES

They had SOLDIERS AND SERVANTS.

Slowly the Christians conquered Al-Andalus.

It was called LA RECONQUISTA.

GRANADA was the last place they conquered.

That was the end of the MIDDLE AGES.

MONASTERIES

THERE WERE A LOT OF CHURCHES IN THE MIDDLE AGES.
They could read and write.

EARLY MODERN AGE

IN 1492, CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS DISCOVERED AMERICA. That was the start of the Early Modern Age.
