Exploring the Impact of Astronomical Events

CoCosmic Catastrophe:

Astronomical impact refers to the collision of celestial objects with each other. It is a phenomenon that has been occurring for billions of years and has had a significant impact on the evolution of our solar system.

Introduction to Astronomical Impact

There are two main types of astronomical impact:

  • Asteroid impact
  • Comet impact
Asteroids are rocky bodies that are typically found in between planets, while comets are icy bodies that originate from the outer reaches of the solar system.Impacts originated from comets tend to be more explosive than asteroid impacts because comets are made up of ice and other substances that vaporize upon impact, creating a shockwave that can cause significant damage.

Types of Astronomical Impact

Impacts on Planetary EvolutionAstronomical impacts have played a significant role in the evolution of planets. For example, the Moon is believed to have formed as a result of a giant impact between Earth and a Mars-sized body early in the history of the solar system. In addition, impacts have also been responsible for creating many of the craters and basins that we see on the surfaces of planets and moons throughout the solar system.

Astronomical impacts have also been linked to mass extinction events throughout Earth's history. The most well-known example is the extinction of dinosaurs (66 millions years ago), which is believed to have been caused by a large asteroid impact.Other mass extinction linked to astronomical impacts include the Permian-Triassic extinction event, which is believed to have wiped out over 90% of all species on Earth.

Impacts and Extinction Events

Unfortunately we can't yet prevent astronomical impacts from occurring, but we can potentially track objects and look for strategies to deviate them if they are found to be in route of collision with the Earth.
