What is it?

A modal helps a sentence have a better meaning thanks to its function
Examples: You should do sport more often I can't go to the cinema tomorrow

CAN

We use "can" to express ability, request or possibility too.

CAN'T

We use "can't" to express inability, prohibition or a strong disbelief too.

COULD

We use "could" to express past ability, polite request or possibility.

BE ABLE TO

We use "be able to" to express ability or possibility.

MUST

We use "must" to express obligation and necessity.

MUSTN'T

We use "mustn't" to express prohibition.

We use "would" to express a formal request or an offer.

Modal perfects

They express the speaker's intentions, but referred to past actions.
modal + have + past participle
MODAL PERFECTS

Examples: We should have bought a flat years ago I could have written a book She must have visited him in the hospital
