SCAFFOLDING

all the words of a language

to make someone practice a skill by repeating the same thing several times

corrective feedback, as well as encouraging comments, were provided by the teacher.

to encourage the development or growth of ideas or feelings

a measure of the quality of a student’s performance, usually represented by the letters

What is an approache to language teaching?

An approache to language teaching may refer to our view of language and our view of how language learning takes place.

Presentation, Practice and Production (PPP)

Presentation – Practice – Production, or PPP, is a method for teaching structures (grammar or vocabulary) in a foreign language. As its name suggests, PPP is divided into three phases.

Test

what does ppp consist of?

Is the best way to learn language. Interacting rather than to learn about it

Is a method for teaching structures, grammar or vocabulary

Is a way of analysing and teaching language based on the idea

Test

WHAT HAPPENS DURING THE PRODUCTION PHASE?

is controlled by the teacher. The teacher might use a text, an audio tape or visual aids to demonstrate a situation.

learners practice saying or writing the language structure correctly.

the learner use the newly learnt language structure to practice and produce oral or written texts.

Test

WHAT HAPPENS DURING THE PRODUCTION PHASE?

the learner use the newly learnt language structure to produce oral or written texts

Learner should not be allowed to make mistakes during this phase

The learner focus on accuracy

RESULTS

EXCELLENT!!

Lexical Approach

The lexical approach is a way of analysing and teaching language based on the idea that it is made up of lexical units rather than grammatical structures. The units are words, chunks formed by collocations, and fixed phrases.

LEXICAL APPROACH

START!

EVALUATION

Test

Is one of the roles of this method?

The sillabus focuses on task, fucntions and topic areas based on learners' commicative needs

Teacher gives learners examples of a taget language area

Teachers need to help students become aware of the lexical structures that commonly occur in the language

Test

Is one of the advantages of lexical approach:

fosters a positive and engaging classroom environment that encourages student participation and interaction

Is helpful and motivating for students to have step by step learning process

Improved social and critical thinking skills

is controlled by the teacher. The teacher might use a text, an audio tape or visual aids to demonstrate a situation.

the learner use the newly learnt language structure to practice and produce oral or written texts.

Language is learnt by learning chunks as whole and complet units

Functional approach

The communicative porpuses for which we use language

It leads us to emphasize receptive (listening/readindg) activities

It recognaizes that the speaker must have a real porpuse for speaking and something to talk about

It provides for the reading of everyday, real world language

Communicative approaches

The communicative approach is based on the idea that learning language successfully comes through having to communicate real meaning. When learners are involved in real communication, their natural strategies for language acquisition will be used, and this will allow them to learn to use the language.

Grammar Translation

The primary purpose of this method is to enrich their literature and language reading proficiency. And for this reason, this method is also called the Classical Method.

Total Physical response (TPR)

TPR is a dynamic approach in which students are encouraged by the teacher to use physical responses, such as miming the meaning of a word, in addition to spoken responses. By acting out language, it is thought that students interpret meaning through different parts of the brain, pairing physical and intellectual analysis.

Guided Discovery

Guided Discovery is a teaching strategy used to introduce materials in the classroom. The primary goal of Guided Discovery is to generate interest and excitement about classroom resources and help children explore their possible uses.

Content- based learning

Language is learnt best if presented tolearners through interesting topics which help them increase their knowledge of the world

CLIL

Content and Language Integrated Learning

Language is learnt mainly through acquisition and trough using it. Language does not need to be obviously focused on.

Total Physical response (TPR)

Students Focus on understanding before speaking

Students hear dialogues then repeat them

Students move round the classroom to carry out instructions

Test

Content and language Integrated Learning (CLIL)

Language is used to communicate about school subjects

The teacher focuses on developing learners' cognitive skills

Students often do activities that focus on language accuracy

Test

Presentation, Practice and Production(PPP)

Students always start learning a new piece of language by doing a task

Teachers need to focus learner's attention on new target language

Students need opportunities to get languageright before they experiment

Test

Task based Learning (TBL)

The teacher does not control the language that students use in tasks

Task aim to show students what language they need to learn

Tasks must be done after students have practised target language

Good effort!!

The capacity for learn is a gift, the abilty to learn is a skill, the willingness to learn is a choice
