Create Structures for Collaborative Support
01
Create Structures for Collaborative Support
- Supportive collaboration is key to a successfull partnership between an instructional coach and an adult learner.
- When a strong foundation is laid by the instructional coad, the adult learner will feel comfortable and be able to share their succeses as well as their challenges (Weinberg, 2021).
- Instructional coaches should always encourage their adult learners to ask questions and take part in open conversations.
- Talking is one of the best ways for adult learners to take in the and make connections with the information that they are learning (Cobb, 2023).
- These conversations can be a great starting point for catching mistakes or incorrect assumptions the adult learner may be making.
- Collaboration also gives adult learners the opportunity to be involved in planning their learning as they explore who they are in the classsroom (USD, 2017).
Cultivate Reciprocal Teaching and Learning
02
Cultivate Reciprocal Teaching and Learning
- It is important for the instructional coach to set a good example of what it mean a looks like to be a good teacher.
- A great way to show this is by the adult learner being able to observe the instructional coach in their own classroom.
- This allows the adult learner to see a the lesson material and delivery through the students' perspective (Laidler, 2017).
- They are getting first hand experience as the learner.
- Once the model lesson is done, the adult learner and instructional coach take time to discuss what they noticed and liked before the adult learner takes the lesson back to their classroom (Laidler, 2017).
- From here, the instructional coach is able to give feedback and help the adult learner make adjustments.
Provide Support Through Classroom Visits
03
Provide Support Through Classroom Visits
- PLC and other meetings are a key part of good instructional coaching however nothing is more beneficial than seeing teaching happening in real time.
- Providing feedback right in the moment can help adult learners become immediately aware of how something can be changed to make it better (Cobb, 2023).
- This practice will help instructional coaches set their adult learners on the right path to success rather than having to come back to it at a later time (Cobb, 2023).
- Classroom visits give instructional coaches the opportunity to not only provide feedback, but to also offer encouragement and point out how well the adult learner is doing (USD, n.d.)
