What is multiculturalism

Multiculturalism is the interrelation of various cultures in the same environment.
It is a social phenomenon that can be related to globalisation and post-modern societies.
Some countries present a greater multiculturalism. Much due to the different immigrant groups received, but also by observing other integration factors and the development of new cultures from the cultural collide.

Multicultural diversity

Cultural diversity refers to a coexistence of various ethnicities and cultures in the same community, society or country.
Diversity means plurality, variety and differentiation, a concept that is considered the total opposite of homogeneous.

Characteristics of multiculturalism

Inclusion as equal to ethnic and cultural minority sectors of a society, allowing them to preserve their cultural identity.

In general terms, multiculturalism can be characterised as follows:

It proposes that the inhabitants of a country live together peacefully in their differences, without having to sacrifice their cultural identity in favour of a dominant one.

It is considered a more just, comprehensive and tolerant social model, which allows people to express who they really are.

Multiculturalism in Brazil

Multiculturalism in Brazil is directly associated with the migration process since the arrival of the Portuguese in 1500.
Brazil developed from a social construction between the Portuguese, the natives and the slave blacks.
Over the centuries, the Brazilian territory received Dutch, French, Spanish, Italian, Japanese, German and other immigrants, transforming Brazilian culture.
The ethnic diversity of Brazilians themselves is another strong multicultural characteristic. The different skin colours, the various shared costumes, different religious beliefs are all part of the multicultural mix.

Brazilian cities with other cultures

Switzerland - Campos Do Jordão

Campos do Jordão lives up to its glamorous title. At an altitude of 1,700 meters, surrounded by the mountains of the Serra da Mantiqueira and by woods, Campos do Jordão shows off its typical European architecture and gastronomy, which combines flavours and recipes from the Old World.

Italy - Bento Gonçalves

It has been a long time since the first Italian immigrants arrived in Bento Gonçalves. With each passing year, their roots become deeper through the architecture, the food and the good wines.

Austria - Treze Tílias

A little piece of Austria also has its space in the Santa Catarina highlands. Here, the typical constructions of the Tirol region are accompanied by traditional wood carvings and gastronomy.

nationalities in São Paulo

São Paulo, the largest and richest city in the country, with 460 years of giant challenges and a multicultural legacy. Built with the participation of immigrants from five continents who have given the metropolis of almost 20 million inhabitants its own identity.
  • Over half the population of São Paulo has some Italian ancestry.
  • There are half a million people of eastern descent, the largest Japanese colony in the world.
  • Seven million Lebanese and countless immigrants from every corner of the world, and the city has become a mixture of cultures.

Conclusion

With this presentation we conclude that multiculturalism represents an essential and necessary approach to face the challenges of an ever more diverse and globalized society. By recognizing and valuing cultural diversity, multiculturalism invites us to rethink our perceptions and prejudices, promoting equality, inclusion and mutual respect.
