Burgos Cathedral
The Burgos Cathedral is a cathedral temple of catholic worship dedicated to La Virgen María.
It's located in Burgos, Spain.
On April 8th (1885) it was declared a National Monument, and a World Heritage Site (by UNESCO) on October 31st (1984).
It was built by following french Gothic patterns.

A romanesque Cathedral before The Burgos Cathedral
On the site where nowadays we can find the Burgos Cathedral, there used to be a Romanesque Cathedral. A very signigicant event was held there, the wedding of the king of Castilla, Fernando III, with Beatriz de Suavia.
The reason why it was demolished and later rebuilt is because Burgos was a royal and modern city that was constantly expanding, so a new Cathedral was needed in order with the rank and importance of the city.
The Burgos Cathdral VS Notre Dame
King Fernando III and Bishop D. Mauricio decided by mutual agreement to build a cathedral according to the new Gothic style (Which was already spreading throghout Europe).
sTYLE
The bishop had studied in Paris and knew the great French cathedrals.
With French architects brought to Burgos by Bishop D. Mauricio, the first construction of the Burgos Cathedral began, which follows the model of Notre Dame(Paris).
Clear Comparison
The legend of El Papamoscas
El Papamoscas is an automaton from the Burgos Cathedral that opens its mouth every hour on the dot while moving its right arm to activate the clapper of a bell. It´s located at the main nave.
The legend says that the Burgos Cathedral recieved daily, and practically incognito, the visit of the monarch Enrique III "El Doliente''. Now I´m going to tell you the story

Gothic Architecture
Style
The Gothic style began in France in the 12th century and spread to the rest of Europe. The cathedrals were the most famous examples of Gothic architecture.
La puerta del sarmental
The Gothic elements that stand out the most in the Cathedral are the buttresses, the pointed arches and the ribbed vaults.
Capilla de San Gregorio
Gothic painting

In those times theocratism and theocentrisim prevailed, therefore, all the economic goods that were obtained (through the shearing of sheep) were invested in buinding churches or, in this case, a cathedral.
Sheep cattle
Trashumant
The most outstanding economic activity in Burgos was the commercial one.Burgos emerged as a very important commercial center based, above all, on wool products with Eastern Europe.
Shearing, is the work of cutting the fleece (the wool of sheep and lambs). This work had a great economic importance in Burgos, what its more, for several centuries, the economy of the province of Burgos was based on the enormus volume reached by the wool trade.
The most notable were the herds of trashumant Merino sheep.
Why is all that related with the Burgos Cathedral
Structural features of the Burgos Cathedral
levels of the cathedral
It consists of three levels
The upper level with the door of La Coronería.
The middle level With its entrance from Santa María on its main façade and Pellejería on the façade next to the chapel of Los Condestables.
The lower level La Plaza de San Fernando with its Sarmental façade.
The tomb of Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar (El Cid) and his wife, doña Jimena Díaz
First tomb initially, the Cid was buried in the cathedral of Valencia (where he was from).
Second tomb later, his widow decided to transfer his body to the Burgos Monastery of San Pedro de Cardeña. (Jimena herself was also buried there).
Third tomb when this Romanesque church was demolished to build another Gothic one, the tombs of El Cid and Doña Jimena were placed in front the sacristy and finally in the transept of Burgos Cathedral.
But I have to say that there are several pieces scattered throughout Europe.
Plaza de Santa María
Modifications (15th and 16th centuries)
It underwent very important modifications
The Condestable´s chapel
The lantern tower of the crossing
The spiers of the main façade
The decorative elements and the liturgical furniture inside the Cathedral
The interior of the cathedral consists of various styles, from Gothic to Renaissance and Baroque.
