Globally about 1 in 3 (30%) of women worldwide have been subjected to either physical and/or sexual intimate partner violence or non-partner sexual violence in their lifetime.

Gender Pay Gap

Worldwide, women only make 77 cents for every dollar earned by men. Even though the work itself may require equal or more effort and skills, it’s valued and remunerated less.

Women’s leadership and political participation

In 2023, only 6 countrieshave 50 per cent or more women in parliament in single or lower houses: Rwanda, Cuba, Nicaragua, Mexico, New Zealand, and the United Arab Emirates.

Women in senior and middle management positions

Only 1 in 5 firms worldwide have a female CEO or top manager, and it is more common among the smaller firms.

Unpaid work

From cooking and cleaning, to fetching water and firewood or taking care of children and the elderly, women carry out at least two and a half times more unpaid household and care work than men.

Child marriage

In 2023, still 1 in 5 young women aged 20 to 24 years were married as children. India alone accountsfor one thirdof the world’s child brides.

Inequalities between men and women exist in all regions of the world.

Inequalities between men and women can be related to two aspects in particular, gender stereotypes and patriarchal power relations.

Gender equality is a fundamental human right...

...which means that all people, regardless of their gender, should have the same rights and opportunities without discrimination.

Women and girls make up half the world's population!

This means that if they do not develop their full capacities and potential, we all lose out. Inequalities start from birth and last throughout their lives. They can be deprived of healthy health and nutrition leading to an increased risk of child mortality.

... many are forced into early marriage. Throughout their lives they may be victims of harassment and violence, find it harder to find more job opportunities and a fair wage.
