the armada portrait

Compito di realtà

Figures – Gesture & Expression

This painting commemorates Elizabeth I's defeat of the Spanish Armada in 1588. Elizabeth is shown turned three-quarters to the right, while she is sitting on an armchair and she has her right hand resting on a globe. Her gaze is turned towards the viewer and she seems confident because she wants to be respected and feared. Elizabeth looks 50 years old from her face

Figures – Symbols

In addition to the clothes and precious jewels that Elizabeth I wears, 4 symbols can be seen: a globe, a crown, a statuette depicting a mermaid and 2 windows where in one there are ships in a stormy sea and in the other there are ships on a clear day. Thanks to her clothes and the crown placed in the background, it is understood that Elizabeth is in possession of all the power. She wears a black dress with the sleeves and skirt of a beige fabric embroidered with pearls

Composition

Elizabeth seems satisfied with the defeat of the Spanish Armada and that is why she was depicted in the middle of the 2 scenes in the background which represent the invasion of England by Philip II and the defeat of the Spanish Armada
