Doryphoros

the doryphoros was found in 1797 in the Palestra Sannitica of Pompeii

Polycletus'technique: the chiasmus

START

placement: Naples National Archeological Museum

author: Polycletus

material:Roman copy in marble but the original in bronze

height:212cm

date:450 b.c.

history

The work was created when the artist was active in the Peloponnese and probably depicts Achilles with a spear. To make it, Policleto proceeded to a series of measurements of young people until he found a mathematical module, which linked the various anatomical parts. The work was among the most replicated in the ancient world and many versions are known.

roman copy

Among the best figures, the one from Pompeii is kept in the Neapolitan archaeological museum, pratically complete apart from the absence of the spear. The Neapolitan version was found during the Vesuvian archaeological excavations, in the Samnite gymnasium, on 12 june 1797.

description

A neked young man advances slightly raising his left arm, with which he holds a spear resting on his shoulder.Exemplary is the application of the chiasmus, or rather of the crossed rhythm capable of giving extreme naturalness to the representation. The right leg, in fact, is stretched out and corresponds to the left arm in tension; the left lower limb,on the contrary, is relaxed like the lowered right arm: every tension therefore finds its adequate contrast, damping itself on the opposite side in relaxtion. The arc of the pelvis is also found to be inclined towards the bent leg and it opposite to tht displacement of the shoulders. The result is a restrained dynamism that cancels any impression of static nature, unlike the previous ones of the archaic and severe statuary.

details

The whole is powerful and muscular, with a robustly structured head and a mediatively suspended expression. It differed from the original by the piece placed to support the latter's right arm and by the trunk, which had the function of unloading the weight.
