Held in London, it's a 42.195 km pedestrian race that has taken to the streets of London every year since 1981.

The race is currently sponsored by Virgin Group, and is called the Virgin London Marathon.

The official London Marathon course is 42.195 km and runs from Blackheath to the Mail in front of Buckingham Palace, via Charlton, Woolwich, Tower Bridge, Canary Wharf, Docklands, Parliament Square and Birdcage Walk.

7747 runners took the start of the first edition. Since then, it has become an essential part of the athletics season. The event's attendance record was set in 2019: 42,906 people crossed the start line and 42,549 the finish line.
