The History of TV Girl by Oliver Schmidt

Reasearch Question #1: Who Is TV Girl?

TV Girl is a band that was based in San Diego, California. They were created in 2010, and the band contains members Brad Petering, Jason Wyman and Wyatt Harmon. Their first popular album was their 2014 album “French Exit”. “Knittingfactory.com”'s description of them is, “On the surface, TV Girl is a sunny, throwback splash of ‘60s French pop and southern California soul. Yet, under that shiny veneer lays a dark heart, beating with sharp wit and cynical alienation, and the music is all the more alluring for it. TV Girl, composed of Brad Petering, Jason Wyman, and Wyatt Harmon, was formed in 2010 by Petering as an outlet to blend the love of Spector-esque girl-group pop with an emerging interest in hip-hop.”

Research Question #2: What genre is TV Girl?

TV Girls music can vary from album to album, their critically acclaimed album “French Exit” is a Pop album, while their album “The Wild, The Innocent, The TV Shuffle” is a Rock album. Sometimes, theyll produce an album with different genre songs. Though, with a Google search, it will tell you TV Girl is a “Alternative/Indie” band. “Rateyourmusic.com” states TV Girls genres as, “Indie Pop, Neo-Psychedelia, Bedroom Pop, Hypnagogic Pop, Chillwave”. The band themself describe their music as “indie pop”, stating “It's something you can sing along to, but wouldn't sing around your parents.”

Research Question #3: Where does TV Girl get their name from?

New University states, “Their band does not actually have a woman in the lineup, which further emphasizes the meaning of their name; the idea of a TV Girl is referencing the ideal yet intangible woman.” As stated, there's no woman in the band, but they do use samples of women speaking from movies, or other sources. They do occasionally have singer Jordana Rye, an artist they have a collaborative album with, do performances with them. There are female vocals in some of their songs, "Cynical One" being one. In Geniuses "Ask us a Question about this Song" for Cynical One they answer the question, "Who is singing with TV Girl on this track?" with "It’s probably Molly Raney, who performs under the name Poppet, but TV Girl also credits Lydia Fothergill with additional vocals."
