ROSA PARKS

There are many wonderful statues all over the world. Many of them help us to remember the lives of great people.

One day in 1965, a bus driver in Alabama, in the US, asked Rosa Parks to give a man her seat - because he was white and she was black. She said "no," and the police decided to take her away. It was a very important moment in the history of black people's rights in the US. The statue shows Rosa sitting on a rock, wearing the same clothes as that day in 1965.

The "Candangos" were men who traveled from all over Brazil, between 1956 and 1960, to build the new capital city of Brazil, Brasilia. In 1956, 256 men arrived - but before long, there were 30,000, who worked hard to build the city. Brasilia opened in 1960 and this eight-meter-high statue to remember the "Candangos" is in the "Three Powers" square The two figures are holding digging tools.
