Allyship Action Plan
Prioritizing inclusion in your everyday work environment.
Commit to completing 1 or 2 actions from each category.
The below actions are some suggestions. Allyship comes in many forms and we encourage you to choose actions that complement where you are in your journey.
- Create a space where others feel safe to speak freely and foster understanding by using "I" statements.
- Practice active listening through verbal and nonverbal cues.
- If you feel comfortable, consider sharing your pronouns when you introduce yourself to someone new, or add them to your email signature as a way to foster a culture of respect around pronouns regardless of one's gender identity.
- Intentionally consume different media - podcasts, books and shows where the people involved have different identities than you.
- Build up your teammates' credibility by highlighting their expertise and ideas.
- Learn to recognize microaggressions and understand how to speak about them - either in the moment or later on.
- Speak up in meetings if you notice someone is being interrupted, or create space and opportunties for everyone to speak.
- Use inclusive language and avoid terms that could be offensive or hurtful to people in underrepresented groups.
- Amplify the ideas of underrepresented teammates by recognzing them and their idea by name. This could look like, "Yes, I agree with Carol's idea."
- Take accountability for your mistakes by acknowledging them, apologizing, and working to do better in the future.
- Practice apologizing in a timely manner and taking full responsibilty for your actions.
- Speak up when you observe disrespectful behavior.
Make a Plan
- What do you need in order to complete your plan? How will you get it?
- When can you put your plan into action? If necessary, mark off time on your calendar so you don't forget.
Remember, as best as you can, take on the responsibility of acquiring the resources you need on your own. Don't put the burden on underrepresented teammates to help you advocate for them.
Follow Through
- Take time to follow through on your commitment. Each action you take brings you another step closer to fostering an inclusive environment and helps you better understand the experience of your underrepresented teammates.
Reflect
Your allyship journey is truly that, a journey, not a destination. Whether you are just getting started or are hundreds of miles in, it’s a good idea to periodically pause and reflect on how it’s going. Consider the steps you took as you reflect on the following questions:
- How did it go?
- What did you learn?
- What went well?
- What might you adjust or change moving forward?
