Zero conditional

This conditional isn’t actually a condition, because it happens 100% of the time. If [Present Simple], [Present Simple]. If you heat water to 100ºC, it boils. If Pep Guardiola thinks, I agree. If you don't put sun cream on, you get burnt.

Question 1/2

Zero conditional

Question 2/2

Zero conditional

First conditional

We use the first conditional when we talk about future situations we believe are real or possible. In first conditional sentences, the structure is usually: If + [Present Simple], [Will + Infinitive] If it doesn't rain tomorrow, we'll go to the beach. If you don’t bring your umbrella, you’ll get wet.

Question 1/2

First conditional

Question 2/2

First conditional

Second conditional

The second conditional is used to imagine present or future situations that are impossible or unlikely in reality. If [Past Simple], Would [Infinitive]. If I were you, I wouldn't mention it. If I won the lottery, I would buy a big house.

Question 1/2

Second conditional

Question 2/2

Second Conditional

Third conditional

Third conditional talks about the past. It's used to describe a situation that didn't happen, and to imagine the result of this situation. If + [Past Perfect], [Would + Past Participle]. If she had studied, she would have passed the exam. (but, really we know she didn't study and so she didn't pass) She wouldn't have been tired if she had gone to bed earlier.

Question 1/2

Third conditional

Question 2/2

Third conditional

In addition to the forms in the previous pages, modal verbs can be used in the main sentence in order to qualify what we say. For example: First conditional: If it rains, I might go to the cinema. Second conditional: If I spent less time on social media, I could spend more time talking to my real friends. Third conditional: If you wanted to go to the party, you should have told them.
