Australopithecus afarensis

Date: 3,9 - 3,0 million years ago in the East of África Height: 107-152 cm Cranium capacity: 370-550 cm3 First hominid to walk erect using its two legs.

Australophitecus africanus

Date: 3,0 - 2,0 million years ago Cranium capacity: 420-500cm3 For the first time, it was proven that origins of human beings was in Africa and not in Asia as previously thought.

Kenyanthropus platyops

Date: 3,5 million years ago Cranium found in Kenia.It shows a balanced mixture of features found in Australopithecus and Homo.

Paranthropus boisei

Date: 2,3 - 1,2 million years ago in the East of África Cranium capacity: 530 cm3 Despite lacking a particularly forceful precision grip, the hand was still dextrous enough to handle and manufacture simple tools.

Paranthropus robustus

Date: 2,0 - 1,5 million years Cranium capacity: 530 cm3 It possessed a humanlike precision grip which would have made possible the production or usage of tools.

Homo habilis

Date: 2,4 - 1,5 million years ago Height: 127 cm Weight: 45 kg Cranium capacity: 500-800cm3 It is thought that it manufactured the Oldowan stone-tool industry and mainly used tools in butchering.

Homo Heidelberguensis

Date: 500-200 thousand years ago in Africa and Europe Cranium capacity: 1200 cm3 It presented a more rounded cranium and possessed some characteristics found in H. erectus and H. sapiens.

Homo Neanderthalensis

Date: 230 - 30 thousand years ago in Africa and Europe Height: 168 cm Cranium capacity: 1450 cm3 They got adapted to living in cold areas and used weapons and tools. They are thought to have been hunters and to have funerary burials.

Homo Sapiens

Date: 195 thousand years ago in Africa Cranium capacity: 1350 cm3 Their tools were noticeably more sophisticated.
