Nous sommes à un mois de notre premier CMESG en personne depuis 2019 et j'espère que vous êtes tous très enthousiastes à l'idée de vous retrouver en personne. Je sais que j'ai hâte de voir les gens et de profiter d'un programme complet du GCEDM, en particulier des opportunités de ce
reconnaissante à l'équipe de l'Université de Regina qui a su relever ce défi. Ce défi, ainsi que certains retards dans les soumissions et des difficultés à trouver une personne traductrice pour le programme, ont retardé la publication du programme complet cette année. J'ai le plaisir de vous annoncer que le programme est maintenant disponible dans les deux langues officielles. En outre, nous avons prolongé la date limite de dépôt des candidatures jusqu'au 8 mai 2023. Je m'excuse pour ce retard et je promets que l'année prochaine, nous serons plus précoces, car nous avons déjà commencé à planifier et nous en ferons davantage après notre réunion à Regina, lorsque nous resterons sur place pour des journées de planification supplémentaires.

Tout d'abord, je remercie le comité organisateur local de l'Université de Regina (Kathy Nolan, Gale Russell, Edward Doolittle et Alayne Armstrong) qui a travaillé très dur pour trouver des lieux, de la nourriture, des possibilités d'excursion et toutes les choses qui vont de pair avec notre rencontre. Je tiens également à remercier l'équipe du comité exécutif (Edward Doolittle, Alayne Armstrong, Limin Jao, Jhonel Moran et Jeanne Kuodogbo) qui a travaillé d'arrache-pied dans les coulisses pour s'assurer que nous disposions d'un programme complet. Cette année, la tâche n'a pas été simple ni directe.
Nous disposons de groupes de travail formidables pour cette année, et j'attends avec impatience les plénières et les orateurs des sessions thématiques. Bien entendu, l'un des points forts de chaque réunion de la GCEDM est l'occasion d'entendre les nouveaux doctorants parler de leur travail et de célébrer avec eux. Je me souviens encore avec émotion de la présentation de mon nouveau doctorat à Terre-Neuve il y a de nombreuses années. Nous retiendrons un élément des séances en ligne pendant la pandémie en affichant les présentations des nouveaux

We are one month away from our first in person CMESG since 2019 and I hope you are all very excited to be together again in person. I know I cannot wait to see people and enjoy a full program of CMESG, especially the opportunities to connect informally with old friends and new. In this newsletter, I want to give both gratitude and some apologies with respect to things that have been happening in advance of our June meeting. First, I am grateful for the hard work of the local organizing committee at the University of Regina (Kathy Nolan, Gale Russell, Edward Doolittle and Alayne Armstrong) who have been working very hard to secure venues and food, excursion opportunities and all the things that come a long with hosting us. I also want to thank the executive team (Edward Doolittle, Alayne Armstrong, Limin Jao, Jhonel Moran, and Jeanne Kuodogbo) who have been working hard behind the scenes to ensure we have a full program. This has not been a simple or straight forward task this year.
along with some delayed submissions and challenges with finding translation for the program resulted in a delayed full program going out this year. I am pleased to say that the program is now available in both official languages. Furthermore, we have extended the early bird deadline to May 8, 2023 in light of this challenge. I apologize for the delay and I promise that next year, we will be earlier as we have already begun some planning and will be doing more following our meeting in Regina as we stay back for additional planning days.
We have some wonderful working groups lines up for this year, and I am very much looking forward to the plenaries and Topic session speakers. Of course, one of the highlights of every CMESG meeting is the opportunity to hear from new PhDs about their work and celebrate with them. I still fondly recall doing my new PHD presentation in Newfoundland many years ago. We will be retaining a piece from the pandemic online sessions by posting presentations of new PhDs to watch in advance thus giving us more time for conversation. Watch for the link to these videos coming soon in your email. Our Gallery Walk is back this year as well, so if you have a new project you want to share or some works in progress you want to chat about, be sure to sign up for the gallery walk when you register.

While many were nominated only two agreed to let their names stand and I am pleased to say that Alayne Armstrong will be returning as treasurer and Limin Jao will be returning as a member at large. I am excited to have your knowledge and wisdom back with our executive for two more years. Your service to our community is very much appreciated.

Depuis mon entrée récente (août 2022) comme professeure à l’Université de Montréal, je ne cesse de réfléchir au chemin parcouru depuis mon tout premier jour aux études graduées. Je prends le temps d’y réfléchir pour apprécier mon cheminement, mais tout particulièrement pour me remémorer et mettre en évidence les sensibilités que j’ai développées à travers mon parcours : sur les mathématiques, sur l’enseignement des mathématiques, sur l’épistémologie et sur la recherche en didactique des mathématiques. Ces sensibilités m’animent, me motivent, jour après jour, et font partie de moi, de qui je suis comme chercheure en didactique des mathématiques. Par ce texte, j’ai eu envie de les partager avec vous à partir de quelques citations qui ont été marquantes pour moi, ayant su me faire réfléchir, me nuancer, me questionner, voire même me provoquer…

New Book by Ann Kajander!!!!
Mathematics For Intermediate Teachers:From Models to MethodsCambridge Scholars Press
This is a mathematics book, written for teachers, both prospective and practicing. It is suitable for those less comfortable with mathematics, as well as those who already have a stronger mathematical background. Research shows that knowledge of traditional formula-based approaches just isn’t enough for effective conceptual classroom teaching. In this book, teachers will learn the reasoning behind the methods, developed in ways that will also make sense to intermediate and early secondary students. Many ideas and activities are directly transferable to classroom use. Concepts will be developed using visual models and representations, manipulatives, reasoning, and with deep connections to other concepts. These methods support better thinking, learning, and understanding for all students. As well, these visual, active approaches are also much better aligned with Indigenous ways of thinking and knowing, a critical benefit for societies striving for decolonization. This book may change the way students think about and understand mathematics – even if they think they already do!

Which Years are Unluckiest?

In Western tradition, Friday the 13th is considered unlucky, and there are people who fear that something bad will happen on that day. Why? No one knows for sure. Maybe it is because of the events of October 13th 1307 (note the 13 in the year as well!) when French king Philip IV ordered mass arrests and subsequent executions of Knights Templar. Perhaps it is due to the publication of the novel Friday, the Thirteenth in 1907 by the American financier Thomas Lawson, which tells a story of a stockbroker who chose that date to bring down Wall Street. In any case, the fear of Friday 13th is recognized in the medical world, and this condition carries the name paraskevidekatriaphobia. Where is math here? We will show that any calendar year must have at least one Friday 13th, and cannot have more than three Friday 13ths.
