Basketball, as we know it now, was invented in 1891 by a physical education teacher named James Naismith, who worked as a coach at the University of Springfield (Massachusetts, United States). Naismith divided the students into two teams and had two baskets hung on the gymnasium balconies, ten feet above the ground: the goal was to walk the track from end to end and dunk a ball (it was a soccer ball at the time) into the baskets.Since the baskets were closed, someone had to climb a ladder to retrieve the ball every time someone scored. In the end, they decided that it was more practical to cut the bottom of the baskets so that the ball would fall.
