Lesson 3. Designing Quality Online Lessons - Assessments

2023

"Assessment is today's means of modifying tomorrow's instruction." - Carol Ann Tomlinson

Esto es un párrafo listo para contener creatividad, experiencias e historias geniales.

Overview

Assessments can cause a lot of anixety for students, face-to-face and online. The real challenge with online assessments is anticipating what questions learners will have beforehand and making sure that your assessment is as clear as possible for them to succeed. As a designer, it is vital to ensure the assessments are meaningful and will result in a quality learning environment. We do not want to have busywork and we do not want to waste the time and energy of the learner. In the lecture, you will review aspects to consider and use to make the learning environment strong. After reviewing these items, you will then look at the assessments you are considering and mold them with the course objectives to be sure they align.

Learning Objectives:

  • Review how teaching online is different from teaching face-to-face
  • Develop learning objectives that align with course assignments/assessments
  • Develop Course Assessments

Assess Yourself

Details

Test yourself on the assessments you are thinking of creating. Can you understand what is being asked and what you must accomplish if you or someone else were taking the assessment?

Going back to Bloom's Taxonomy, think of assessments that will challenge students to "create", "evaluate", and "analyze". Save the lower level verbs for learning activites or foundational learning.

Provide an extreme amount of detail for learners to understand the assignment. Format the instructions to be clear with bullet points and bold significant text.

Peer Collaboration

Present learners with a variety of assessments (case studies, final project, discussions, presentations etc.) Some students may do well in one type of assignment and worse in another.

Provide guides for students on what you will be expecting of them. Consider including a rubric that will give them a breakdown on how they will be assessed.

Provide opportunties for students to recieve feedback from their peers, such as peer reviews or discussions. Students may be able to move the needle further with one another.
