Affective Strategies
The term affective refers to emotions, attitudes, motivations, and values. There are three main sets of affective strategies exist, Lowering Your Anxiety, Encouraging Yourself, and Taking Your Emotional Temperature.
Lowering Your Anxiety
Three anxiety reducing strategies: • Using Productive Relaxation
Using the teqniques are alternately tensing and relaxing all of the major muscle groups in the body , as well as the muscle in the neck and face, in order to relax or tchniqueof breathing deply from the diapraghm, or the techniqueof meditating by focusing on a mental image or sound.
• Using Music Listening to soothing music, such as a classical concert, as a way to relax. • Using Laughter
By watching a funny movie, reading a humorous book, listening to jokes, etc.
Encouraging Yourself
• Making Positive Statement
Saying or writting positive statements to oneself in order to feel more confident in learning the new language.
• Taking Risks Wisely
Pushing oneself to take risks in a language learning situation, even tough there is a chance of making a mistake or looking foolish. Risk must be tempered with good jugdgment.
• Rewarding Yourself
Giving oneself a valueable for a practicularly good performence in the new language.
Taking Your Emotional Temperature
In this set help learners to assess their feelings, motivations, an attitudes and in many case to relate them to language tasks, the four strategies are :
• Listening to Your Body
Paying attentions to the signals given by the body. These signals may be negative, reflecting stress, tension, worry, fear and anger, or they may be positive, indicating happiness, interest, calmness, and pleasure.
• Using a Cecklist
Using a cecklist to discover feelings, attitudes and motivations concerning language learning in general, as well as concerning specific language tasks.
• Writting a Lnguage Learning Diary
Writting a diary or journal to keep track of events and feelingsin the poces of learning a new language.
• Discussing Your Feelings With Someone Else
Talking with another person to discover and press feelings about language learning.
