Hydroelectric Energy

An environmentally friendly energy source

How it work

Hydroelectric power plants harness the energy of water to generate electricity. Water is collected in a reservoir and then released through penstocks. The high-pressure water rotates turbines that are connected to electric generators, producing electrical energy. The generated electricity is transformed and transmitted through high-voltage lines.

Here you can include arelevant fact to highlight

Types of Hydroelectric power plant

Diversion

Impoundment (Conventional Dam):

This is the most common type of hydroelectric power plant, which involves the construction of a dam on a river to create a reservoir. Water is stored in the reservoir, and when released, it flows through turbines to generate electricity.

Diversion power plants use a weir or a diversion dam to divert a portion of the river's flow into a canal or a penstock. The water then flows through turbines, generating electricity. These plants do not require the construction of large dams

Pumped Storage

Pumped storage plants are designed for energy storage. During periods of low electricity demand, excess electricity is used to pump water from a lower reservoir to an upper reservoir. When there is high demand, the stored water is released back to the lower reservoir, passing through turbines to generate electricity.

Advantages

  • Renewable
  • Low emissions
  • Reliable
  • Create Lakes( for recreational purposes and for draw tourist)

Disadvantages

  • Impacts flora and fauna.
  • Higher initial Costs
  • Flood Risk (Vajont, "Dam Assuan" 1963)

Renewable energy in Italy

41,5%

hydroelectric energy

In the early 21st century, hydroelectric power was the most widely utilized form of renewable energy.

1-"Bertini di Porto d’Adda"

3-Small hydropower plants

The first hydroelectric power plant in Italy. It was built in 1895

The river can also be uitlize to create electricity through small power plant.

4-"Three Gorges Dam"

2-"Luigi Einaudi"

The most biggest hydroelettric power plant in the word. The plant is located in China
