What is a Lamplighter?
A lamplighter is a person employed to light and maintain candle or, later, gas street lights. Very few exist today as most gas street lighting has long been replaced by electric lamps.
Why was it important
Lamplighters played an important role in ensuring the safety and security of the cities and towns they worked in. Their work made it easier for people to navigate the streets at night, reducing the risk of accidents and crime.
