Introduction

WHAT IS ENERGY?

Wind power

Wind is the movement of air from an area of high pressure to an area of low pressure. Today, people are using wind turbines to wring electricity from the breeze.

Wind energy comes from turbines. The wind spins the blades, which turn a shaft connected to a generator that produces electricity.

Solar energy

Solar energy is the technology used to harness the sun's energy and make it useable. Many people are familiar with so-called photovoltaic cells or solar pannels, found on spacecraft, rooftops and handheld calculators.

The cells are made of semiconductor materials, and when sunlight hits the cell, it knocks electrons loose from their atoms. As the electrons flow throught the cell , they generate electricity.

Geothermal energy

  • Geothermal steam or water can be used to heat directly homes and officies or to produce geothermal-generated electricity.
  • Geothermal energy derives from the Earth's heat. Thermal energy can be found in the rocks and fluids beneath the Earth's surface.

Geothermal energy

Hydropower

Hydropower is electricity generated using the energy of moving water.

A typical hydro plant is a system with three parts: an electric plant where the electricity is produces, a dam that can be opened or closed to control water flow, and a reservoirs where water can be stored. The water behind the dam flows through an intake and pushes against blades in a turbine, causing them to turn. The turbine spins the generator to produce electricity.

Tidal energy

Tidal energy is a non-polluting, renewable energy powered by the natural rise and fall of ocean tides and currents.

It is produced through the use of tidal energy generators. Tidal barrages and undersea tidal turbines are placed in areas with high tidal movements and harness undersea currents. they are designed to capture the kinetic motion of the ebbing and surging of ocean tides in order to produce electricity.

Wave energy

TWave power is the transport and the hearnessing of energy drom ocean surface waves to produce electricity and sea-water desalination.

It converts the kinetic energy of the waves into electricity by capturing either the vertical oscillation or the linear motion of the waves.

Biomass energy

Biomass is a renewable energy source, it consists in organic material from plants and animals and contains stored energy from the sun.

Plants absorb the sun's energy in a process called photosyntesis. When biomass is burned, the chemical energy in it released as heat. Biomass can be burned directly or converted to liquid biofuels or biogas and burned as fuels.

Biofuel

Biomass is a renewable energy source of energy (rich in hydrogen) that can convert into liquid biofuels, such as ethanol and biodiesel, used to power vehicles.

The energy that it takes to isolate, compress, package, and trasport the hydrogen doesn't leave a high quantity of energy for practical use.
