CONSEQUENCES

Testimony of Giuseppe, a resident of San Sebastiano al Vesuvio:

T"I was born and raised at the foot of Mount Vesuvius, but the eruption of 1944 was the most terrifying I have ever seen. I remember the day it all began: the sky was as dark as night, and the ground was shaking beneath our feet. The initial volcanic explosions threw stones and lapilli into the air, and ash started falling like black rain over the entire town. People were in a state of panic, seeking shelter wherever they could. Fortunately, we managed to find safety, but many homes were destroyed, and many lives were lost during that terrible eruption."

Testimony of Maria, a survivor of the eruption in Ottaviano

"I was a ten-year-old child when Mount Vesuvius erupted in 1944. We lived in Ottaviano, and our village was completely overwhelmed by lava and ash. I still remember the intense heat and the pungent smell of volcanic ash in the air. My family lost everything: our home, our animals, all our belongings. We were forced to leave everything behind and seek refuge elsewhere. It was a very difficult time for us, but we were fortunate to have survived."
