Road-trip narratives
Road-trip narratives, whether by horse and wagon-train or by car, are typically American. Author John Steinbeck believed it was because non-Native Americans had had to move from their homes to get there. There were a lot of books about travelling out to the frontier from the 1840s and road trips came back into vogue from the 1960s, when interstate highways, cheap petrol and cars made them possible. This was seen in literature and film, for example Jack Kerouac's On the road (1957) or films like Thelma and Louise (1991). In a road-trip narrative, the main characters are travelling either to flee from something or on a journey to (self)-discovery.
