Mendeley is a wonderful free reference management software that works seamlessly both online and as a desktop application, making your research journey a little easier and more enjoyable.

Web and Mobile versions offer you the ability to access your references on the go, as well as making notes and annotations.

Your Mendeley library

Your Mendeley library is securely stored in the cloud, allowing access from various applications across different devices and locations. It is essential to synchronize changes made during different sessions across devices to ensure that the most up-to-date version is available on each one.

Installation

The web and mobile versions provide you with the capability to access your references while on the move, as well as to make notes and annotations. The Mendeley web version is accessible through your web browser. Log into your Mendeley account to access it.

Install Mendeley Reference Manager Download Mendeley Reference Manager for Windows, Mac OS, Linux or mobile from www.mendeley.com and install the software.

Mendeley Web Importer - allows you to import references from the web.Install Mendeley Web ImporterThere are three possibilities: 1. Open Mendeley Reference Manager (desktop)> Go to Tools > Install Mendeley Web Importer to download an extension to the browser you are using. A Mendeley icon will be added to your bookmarks bar. 2. At the bottom of Mendeley homepage find Downloads. 3. Or from Extension store for Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge browsers.

Install Mendeley Cite - the citation plugin to cite as you write in Microsoft Word or LibreOffice. There are three possibilities: 1. Open Mendeley Reference Manager >Go to Tools > Install Mendeley Cite for Microsoft Word. This will take you to Microsoft AppSource. Click on Get it now to download the Mendeley Cite app. You will be asked to log in to Microsoft AppSource. 2. At the bottom of Mendeley homepage find Downloads. 3. From the Insert in Microsoft® Word or Word for iPad®

Mendeley offers a number of options for adding material to your library. You can find these by opening the Add new menu.

Collecting references

After logging in to your Mendeley account you can search litereture in the Mendeley Web Catalog. The Mendeley Web Catalog is a collection of all the references added to personal libraries by Mendeley users. Browse the results to find relevant references and PDFs.

When you select a reference you want to have in your library, click on +Add to library. If a PDF file is attached it will be saved in your library, too.

Adding references from the web

To cite a reference from electronic resources use the button Cite and next select the RIS file for export.Note that not always names of reference manager software (e.g. EndNote, Zotero, Mendeley) are given. Drag and drop or save the RIS file from your computer to your Mendeley library.

Your references get automatically sorted into the categories Recently Added and Recently Read. You can organize your library by creating new collections.

You can also add references to your Favorites.

After selecting a reference in your library you can add one or more tags to it in the Tags field, under the Info tab.

You can add PDF files to your Mendeley library. In the PDF reader you can read, search through the text and add highlights or notes.

Open an added PDF file by selecting a reference and clicking on the icon Files available for download or by choosing Read under the Info tab. Any notes you add will be visible under the Notes tab for the specific reference in the main Mendeley window.

If you add any notes you see them under the Annotations tab for the specific reference .

You can also take longer notes in the Notebook section. You can as well type some texts or import parts of the texts you have previously highlighted.

In the References menu of your document there will be Mendeley Cite option. Use it to open your Mendeley library of references. Select references and insert them into the text.

Citing

You can also adjust the citation language.

Change citation style by choosing a different one in the list of Citation Settings.

The appearance of the references varies depending on which citation style is currently active.

To add a citation in the text, place the cursor where you want to insert it. Click on Mendeley Cite to open the list of references on the right hand-side. Select a reference by checking the box next to it. If you want to reference more than one source in the same citation, select several references at the same time. Click on Insert [X] citations to add the chosen references to the text.

To edit a citation, first select it by clicking on it in the text. In the Mendeley Cite panel click on the reference in a box to open up the edits menu. There you can add for example a page number.

Mendeley automatically generates a bibliography based on the references you have cited in the text and according to the citation style that you have chosen. The bibliography will update automatically if you remove citations or add new ones. To create the bibliography, place the cursor where you want to insert it in the text. In the Mendeley Cite panel click on ('More' icon) and select Insert Bibliography.

In Mendeley Reference Manager you can collaborate with your colleagues or other Mendeley users.Collaboration in groups gives the possibility of sharing references and PDF files (including annotations). To create a group, click on New Group under Groups in the menu to the left and name the group.

Using Mendeley Reference Manager you can store and share your research data.Go to Datasets at the bottom of the mendeley.com website in the Products panel where you can search the repository or upload your research data.

At the bottom of the mendeley.com website in the Support panel there are Help Guides which are useful if you need guidance or if you want to learn more about Mendeley features.
