MUSIC

  • The world audience for music in the 1950's was the largest in history and showed every sign of growing even larger.
  • Rock and Roll was just in its infancy, but LOTS of it was created.
  • Classical music was still very popular. Blues, swing and jazz were easily accessible. It was truly the convergence of the future and the past.

FASHION

  • Femininity and conformity are two words that describe 1950’s fashion style the best;
  • After hard times of the previous decade, there was again joy in life and happy times. Men were able to lay their uniforms down, to replace it with more casual clothing. Meanwhile, women could dress up in a “feminine style”;

LITERATURE

  • The 1960s was one of the most tumultuous and culturally significant decades of the 20th century. It was marked by the Vietnam War and antiwar protests, political assassinations, protests for civil rights, etc.
  • The literature reflected what was happening in America on both social and political sides. Authors wrote about gender, race, homosexuality, feminism and war, and they criticized society, just like the youth generation did.

literature

1960

  • In a decade that is known by broking many traditions, adopting new cultures, and launching new social movements, 1960s fashion had a rebel but stylish touch;
  • In the “Swinging Sixties”, the growing popularity of miniskirts and bikinis signified the sexual liberation of empowered women; the bold colors and flower power served as a symbol of opposition and revolution.

LITERATURE

  • History may like to remember the 1970s as gloomy, but it was also a decade of fascinating social and cultural change.
  • A decade of intense cultural self-reflection. And, as always, there were writers ready to get into the conversation.

literature

1970

  • Fashion in the 1970s was about individuality ;
  • New technologies brought advances in production generating higher standards and uniformity. In general, the most famous silhouette of the mid and late 1970’s for both genders, was that of tight on top and loose on bottom.

SPORTS

  • Sports in the 1970s were full of tragedy and triumph.
  • Tragedy was marked most notably by the 1972 Summer Olympics where terrorists invaded the Olympic grounds and killed 11 Israeli athletes and coaches. But there was plenty of triumph to go around.
  • Jack Nicklaus was dominating golf, winning majors at a record breaking pace.
  • Mark Spitz was the superstar of the decade with seven gold medals in the 1972 Summer Olympics.

MUSIC

  • Everyone knows the classic 80’s sound: huge reverby snare drums, lots of delay on the vocals, electronic rhythms and synthesizers.
  • For the first time ever, musicians were regularly playing with a “click track”, or metronome.
  • Because many 80’s instruments were synced via MIDI, it was very important that the backing tracks (typical rhythm) were recorded in perfect tempo.

LITERATURE

  • The 1980s: a decade of massive social, political and cultural change.
  • During the 1980s, conservative politics were becoming more powerful as the Berlin Wall crumbled, new computer technologies emerged, AIDS "destroyed" the United States, etc.
  • There were plenty of writers dying to make all of this make sense.

literature

1980

  • Fashion of the 1980s was characterized by a rejection of 1970s fashion;
  • Fashion trends in the 1980s were about materialistic values and flaunting wealth; having the right clothes meant spending extra money to buy designer;
  • The first half of the decade was relatively disciplined in comparison to the second half, which was when clothing became very bright and vivid in appearance.

SPORTS

  • Sports in the 1980s were dominated by a select few. The names will ring on in sports history forever.
  • Joe Montana, possibly the best quarterback of all time. Mike Tyson, the most feared boxer to walk the planet. Magic Johnson vs. Larry Bird, the best rivalry in the history of sports. George Brett and Robin Yount were two of the best hitters of baseball.

MUSIC

  • Every other week a new genre popped up because it was affordable to have digital recording equipment that could now operate in the artists’ homes.
  • Music engineers got really good in the 1990s. Being able to cut and paste sound files gave song writers and engineers and entirely new way of looping and constructing recorded music.

LITERATURE

  • The 1990s was a decade of peace and prosperity, free from the existential angst of past decades.
  • Whether you were born in the ’90s or have seen relics such as Tamagotchis or endless episodes of Friends, you know the 1990s was an iconic decade.
  • Many 90’s books were made into equally – if not, more so – famous movies.

literature

1990

  • The ‘90s was a golden era for style and street fashion, that continues to constantly be referenced these days. It brought forth a youth movement and offered unworried styles that dipped in rebellion.

SPORTS

  • America’s favourite pastime began to revert to its traditional roots in 1991 with the rebirth of the old fashioned ball park, after two decades of domed stadiums.
  • Evander Holyfield rightfully took his seat on the boxing throne, after Mike Tyson couldn’t keep it together. By the 90s Tyson was either in jail, or making a mockery of the sport.
  • Michael Jordan was the best player in the NBA, carrying the Bulls to 6 NBA Championships. His domination is one like we’ve never seen in the modern era.
