The ALN Team The ALN Team is made up of 4 Additional Learning Support Coordinators (ALSCO’s) and a team of Additional Support Assistants (ASA’s). The ASA’s provide both in class and out of class support for any learners with Additional Learning Needs (ALN). In addition to the ASA’s, there are also Communication Support Workers (CSW’s) who work with learners who communicate using British Sign Language (BSL). On each campus there is an ALN Administrator and Transition Review Officer who support the ALSCO as well as students that have any queries. There is also an ALN Assessor, ASD Coach and an Assistive Technology Coach who are based on all of the campuses who can provide additional support for learners. The ALN Team is Managed by the ALN Manager – Elaine Jones. For more information, please click on the link below: https://www.coleggwent.ac.uk/support/additional-learning-needs/aln-team The role of the ALN Assessor is to assess learners for Exam Access Arrangements. They work across all campuses and provide additional support to the ALSCO’s.
The ALSCO is the person who takes day-to-day responsibility for all learners with ALN. They work closely with the learners, staff, parents and external agencies. The key responsibilities are:
- Advising and supporting lecturers and other staff within the college setting
- Overseeing and coordinating the ASA’s
- Supporting the ASA’s to undertake support requirements
- Carrying out assessments to aid learners development
- Updating and working on the ALN Portal to ensure all support needs are met
- Assess for a diagnosis
- Decide on what course the learner will enrol on.
- Speak to the ALSCO for advice on strategies initially
- Refer the learner to inspire for external support
- If they need the Assistive Technology coach, speak to the ALSCO
- The ALSCO is able to signpost the learner to the relevant assessment centre
The role of the Transition and Review Officer enables the learner to move smoothly from school to college in the following ways –
- Attending annual reviews at school
- Building and maintaining positive collaborations with external agencies
- Ensuring the transitional needs are met in correlation with those stated on the IDP
- Adapting the transition process to suit the individual learner – the process must be person-centred.
- Arranging campus visits
- Arranging for the learner to meet key staff
- Providing opportunities to ask questions
