Classes
Starting off Strong!
Pathophysiology
- You can't do nursing school alone. Form study groups! Make friends! You're all a team now.
- Try to remember your "why"
- Focus on grasping what is happening within the body. Try to visualize the process.
- Spend a little time on this class every single day
- Use outside resources like youtube, picmonic, and tiktok! (verify the info- but use what works for you!)
Pathophysiology is an in-depth look at many disease processes. It can feel overwhelming at first.
Drinking From the Firehose
The point of this class is to give you an introduction to almost every disease you'll be working with as a nurse. This is the foundation for many, many future classes including pharmacology, med surg, and even your clinical experience. It's important to really learn this stuff.
Things You'll Learn in Patho
- Neurological diseases
- Cellular Activities
- Inflammation in detail
- Cancer
- How to start thinking and speaking like a nurse
- ATP & ADP
- The endocrine system
- Heart conditions
- Blood / vascular conditions
- Lungs/ Pulmonary conditions
- Gastrointestinal issues
- Take it seriously.
- Prioritize it.
- Pay attention in class and take notes.
- Record the lecture and re-listen to it throughout the week.
- Meet with your study group to talk through each concept. Take turns explaining each idea to each other.
- Attend SI, go to tutoring, use every resource you can. Live, eat, sleep, and breathe patho for the next 3 months!
Stay Calm! You were accepted into the program for a reason. You got this! :)

Remembering Abbreviations
You'll master medical abbreviations in this course
You'll Use this stuff Forever
No more measuring the speed of trains or counting fruit! You'll actually use this math for your entire career.
Dimensional analysis
By far the most fool-proof method. It is "longer" than some of the other methods, but mastery will prove useful throughout the program.
Multiple approaches
There are so many ways to do med math. You'll find what works for you.
You decided on nursing because you're not a math person. Welcome to nursing math.
Dosage & Calculations
Slow down and re-read the questions. Begin with the end in mind.
Practice
The vast majority of errors in this class are from moving too fast.
Practice
It's not the math- it's learning to read the questions.

Dr. Jean Watson
" “Nurses are a unique kind. They have this insatiable need to care for others, which is both their biggest strength and fatal flaw.”"
This is a beautiful class focused on self reflection. You'll get introduced to the 10 Caritas Processes of Dr. Jean Watson. You'll also be given an opportunity to reflect on the journey you're about to embark on, and hone in on some self-care skills that will help you make it all the way to the end.
Professional Role & Communication
You're here for a reason!
You are no longer competing with anyone in your cohort for a spot in the program- now you're all in this together. Lean on each other, get to know each other. Be prepared for late nights, silly jokes, and to give and recieve the most tear-jerking pep talks you've ever had. Give eachother grace. Give yourselves grace. There's nothing you're going to encounter in this program that you can't handle. Trust yourself. Trust in your ability to adapt to change.
You Can't Do This Alone.
Nursing school is HARD! There will be many ups and downs. But you can do this!
Student Nurses Association
Join the
The National Student Nurses Association is the ONLY pre-professional nursing organization in the US. Every hospital recognizes a SNA on a resume as a signal for a great new nurse.Being a member of SNA has many benefits alongside resume padding- this is a volunteer organization that is heavily involved with our community. You'll be given incredible opportunities to get nursing experience and to help out around Las Vegas! Plus, SNA is a GREAT networking opportunity.
SNA is a Phenomenal Opportunity!
